A regular ole sleeping pill. I used to have to give my Lab one when we traveled so he would chill. Works like a charm.
ETA I should read the whole post. What kind of med is that? Up the dosage? |

Think Pavlov. Every time he freaks due to thunder, toss him a nice (small) piece of meat, dog bonz or other preferred treat. He will in short order equate thunder with Good Chit. You can slowly stop tossing out the Good Chit after El Dawg conditioned.

Room with no windows? Seen dogs that didnt like the flash and that drove em nuts.
If its the noise they dont like, turn up the tv louder or something to distract em. |

Tried it..We keep the blinds drawn and a blanket over his pen during storms and turn up the easy listening...He hears the least little peep of thunder and he's spooked. |

Acepromizine is just some tranquilizers for animals. I have no idea how it works or if it has a human equivalent like some of the meds do. Maybe find out if you can give a higher dose. I'm pretty sure they use it to put them to sleep for surgery, so it has to work at the right dose. If not, then the vet should have another tranq you could try.

sounds odd, but cover him with a blanket completely.. Works great with our cocker spaniel. Usually she is the one to go and work her way under a blanket.

J/K...... Bud, situations are all different for each pet, but have you tried acting like there is nothing going on when your dog gets upset? Kind of a ingore/buisness as usual attitude? I know many pets feed to the point of ridiculusness off their owners vibes. Kind of like not making a big deal of a small child who fell down and did not get hurt. Just my .02 |

Ours are crate trained and thunderstorms and fireworks send the springer over the edge. We close him in his crate and he is happy as a clam.

As a youth on the farm we had a Corgi, funny dog with no legs that could go from dead stop and burst run fast enough to get a bird off the ground before it could get out of Corgi jumping range.
But as it got older when the storms hit, the dog would jump through the window screen through the glass to get into the house. |

My late, great beagle, Scooter, used to begin whining, and then barking incessantly, as hot air balloons floated over or near our home in Plano, Texas!
When we were driving around in Plano, and he saw the hot air balloons in the distance, he would do the very same thing! Never figured out the psychology of that behaviour, at all! But when he started acting in that manner, we knew that there was a hot air balloon somewhere in the vicinity! Eric The(Bumfuzzled)Hun

Vet gives us 25mg tablets for a 30lb dog (some dogs get 10mg) On really bad nights he gets 1 1/2 tablets. We have also tried Valium |

I have a dog that calms when covered with a blanket and placed near someone. This year he lost his hearing so it no longer bothers him.
