If you can put it in the eye socket or ear 7X57 Mauser with solid bullet will do.

I would want something quite large in the 50 ca or larger.

Poor thing.

Fucking idiots take a 15,000lb. WILD animal and subject it to all sorts of degrading treatment, and wonder why it goes fucking nuts when its had enough.

Elephants are highly intelligent and WILD.  No matter how they seem domesticated, any animal  that is used to being at the absolute top of the foodchain (in THEIR natural world) simply can never fully accept taking orders from puny humans.

Not surprised at all when they figure out that THEY are really in charge.

I've never enjoyed watching that video.

The sight of the elephant during the final barrage of bullets as it rocks back and forth and leans into the Camaro...

ugh.  And with that stupid-ass Star plastered to its forehead.  That's like dying with a beanie on.

Any known facts on this shooting?  What cartridges were fired?

it was on "when animals attack" once and the guy who put her (it was a female elephant) down used a 30-30 (it was the biggest gun he could get ahold of quickly)

One well known African hunter used the 256 Roberts, until he missed a brain shot during a charge and was kilt.

Read anything by Peter Hathaway Capstick, he's one of the best. "Death In The Dark Contnent" is a good one to start with.

It makes for great reading.

+1 to this...even where it's legal a good PH won't allow you to go after ANY of the Big 5 with less than a .375 and even then you're looking at one round in the brain and a follow up in the heart on an elephant...that is IF the first shot was well placed.....

1) Shredding every square inch of its flesh will stop it.

2) You seriously think any .22 is going to do anything more than piss it off even more?

+ 1 .458 Win Mag. Have read several works by a few different authors. They like to use solids for elephants, SPs for lions. I don't think I'll ever make it to Africa, so it doesn't matter too much to me.

When I was in a game park in South Africa as a kid, the guides (both Rhodesian ex-military) had .458 Win Mag strapped to the Land Rover.

When an elephant got loose in Copenhagen, the police killed it with MP5s.

I guess the lesson is that if you've only got time for one or two shots, you really need the big cartridge to be sure, but if you've got full-auto or lots of time, almost anything will do.
