Feb 1977 Arnold Schwarzenegger poses naked in gay magazine After Dark, appearing in 22 photographs shot by Jack Mitchell including the full cover color. The photos selected "combined the very exhibitionist photos for maximum sex appeal to its gay demographic" (Jack Fritscher)

In the 1970's Arnold Schwarzenegger defined the "ultimate man" image. I'm sure that as such, he would hold the same appeal to all those that find the male body sexy, regardless of gender. Also, he was a massive publicity whore. He'd do anything ... ANYTHING ... to get some press. Marketing genius!

so did Lou Ferrigno. But Lou was greener and didn't talk as much.

But Lou Ferrigno was, and still is, a very nice guy who would never sell short a friend or go behind a friend's back. Watch the interpersonal dynamic between AS and LF near the end of "Pumping Iron." AS is deliberately undermining LF's confidence and composure. LF was a great bodybuilder, but AS was a much more ruthless competitor. I'm not bagging on AS for this, merely pointing out the chasm that separates the two men philosophically.

Also, LF didn't speak as much because of his speech impediment, which is related to his patial deafness.

A lot of bodybuilders back in those days did gay picture shoots.
This was in the days before body building was BIG BUCKS, and most pumpers were poor from buying food and all that goes into the sport.

As one of them said "The work was easy and the money was great".

This is not much different from young women posing for nudie photos, only to have them turn up later when they hit it big.
