I don't really get why the one of the most (if not THE most) persecuted group of people in the history of the world could be so anti-gun. Or is this just an American Jewish thing? Reform Judaism thing? I don't get it. Or just the noisy leadership of Judaism?

Considering the Holocaust and the current situation in Isreal, I'm surprised that there are any anti-gun Jews.
ETA: Living in Georgia, I have only met a couple of Jews, but both were really into Class III guns, and if I'm not mistaken, both were SOTs. |

I am a Jew and I adhere to the fact that we must be ready to protect ourselves...as a person and a people. I to like Diaz am a Jew by choice, only I did it because I knew I was a Jew, not for a woman, or to get ahead.
But as before I formally became a Jew, I had guns, I will have guns, and I know many Jews that aere the same. There are many Jews that think that if htye are non violent, they wil be left alone...they are merely Fools! I will throw myself in with those that resisted the Nazis, those that are brave and free, there are too many Jews that wear the religion as a reason to ban guns and violence.....it is not! Read the T*r*h...it is not a book of peace, it is the story of a struggle of a people that were different, in not one place does G*d, tell Jews to be cower, and let G*d fight, Moses had to face Pharoah, the story repeats through out our history. Chanaka is no tthe story of jus the miracle of the oil...it is the story of a people that stood up to oppresors and fought them...but they tell us it is about oil. All Jewish holiday have one thing in common..'we are still here' The Shumers, Boxers and Feinsteins are no different than those that conspired to turn over good people to the oppressors....and G*d dealt with them in the same way. |

I don't see the Jews in Israel banning guns from their common man.
I think it is strictly American Jews who feel safe here. I know the Warsaw Ghetto Jews in the 40's would have liked to be able to own assault rifles. |

Several years ago, in the "Ask The Rabbi" feature on the JFPO website, Rabbi Marmelstein addressed the question this way: Many Jews simply choose to put their faith in the state for protection against persecution. In the Jewish culture, there is a strong fear of mob violence, and the state represents the polar opposite of a mob. Similarly, guns in the hands of anyone other than the state are equated with mob violence. Sure, it flies in the face of thousands of years of history, but it's still the way they tend to think. |

I was sneaky in this. My dad, would take me shooting as a kid without telling the Jewish family members. I also take my Jewish cousin's kids to the range under the guise of shooting .22s like at day camp. This is ok with them. We usually slip the ceiner converted AR into the mix. My now non Jewish sons see this as no big deal as they are used to it. The jewish kids get an ear to ear grin that even my less than prepared cousins can't deny. The net result is that they all now know how to shoot an AR reasonably accurately. What they do with that knowledge and persuits of hobby or self defense is up to them.
I get some credibility in these matters in that side of the family with 20 years in LE. My answer was simple. Every Jew must know how to use the tools of self defense. Whether they will ever actually need them or not. The logic was lost on my cousins wife as we were discussing this at a local deli prior to a range trip. Shy had every sort of excuse and kept asking why? At a very oportune moment an elderly lady walked by. I pointed to the # on her inner forearm and said in a dead serious tone, Thats why!!! She never questioned our outings again. |

That's interesting. I never heard that before. Now, I had heard before the Jewish flirtation with socialism and communism had to do with their interest as a persecuted and ethically-minded people in achieving ultimate equality. |

Word. The only thing we learn from history is that we never seem to learn from history. You'd think after the Holocaust or just the rising anti-Semitism in Europe why the need for Jews to arm themselves is obvious. |

Israelis have a tendancy towards socialism, but only with other Israelis. It's not due to any political doctrine, but due to the way their society has been structured throughout history.
You basically have had a group of Jews living in a foreign society and a lot of times treated as outcasts, so they band together for support. Support includes sharing what they have with each other, and fully expecting it to be paid when they are in need. That's what Israel is like on a large scale. It breaks down some on that large of a scale, but that's the general idea, at least. It's clannish behavior, but can you really blame them for it? It goes back to the thing about tigers and avoiding all large cats with stripes in the other thread. Anti-gun? Most Israelis aren't. Most American Jews are, but then again, most American Jews are also liberals, so it's likely not so much a Jewish thing as a liberal thing. |

No, it more a New York City thing.
New Yorkers are decendents of people who came from Europe, looked around and said, "OK, this is good enough for me." The rest of the country is decended from people who came from Europe, looked around and said, "Screw this, let's go see what life has to offer." And they built a country. |

I just don't get it myself. As a not particularly religious Jew in New York I find myself in the minority as pertains to my beliefs in the 2nd, my love of firearms, and my firm feeling that I can only rely on myself to protect me and mine. Sometimes I want to grab them by the shoulders and tell them to wake up!

Isreal is not the US. The US and Isreal are both seperate sovereign nations first and foremost, do not under any circumstance confuse the two. That is the mistake too many make.
