I was thinking about this the other night at work. I don't make that much money but I am comfortable & happy for the most part. If I had a million at my disposal I would find it easy to retire, & just enjoy the simple things in life. Like fishing & hunting & owning a few acres of land, & a log cabin to live in.
I wouldn't allow catalogs or adds for things to be delivered to m, & I would just get the things I enjoy already. Maybe a few guns[full auto] & some ammo stores, & a good range to shoot on. I think I could make my million last me & my son the rest of our lives.

Would you retire like me, or work to make yourself a bigger kingdom?

I couldn't retire at 45 with only a million.  It can't generate the income stream I would need.  If I was given a million I would keep  my job, buy a beach house, and invest the rest to hopefully afford a couple good hunting trips a year.  I would continue to work and save for retirement.

Couldnt retire on it, but i would definitely quit my job and take a year or two off...buy a house, a new truck...a rifle or 3...and invest the rest conservatively.

I would pay off all my debts, pay off the debts of some close relatives, and invest the rest. I would still go to work, because the investment income (even if I invested all of it) would probably not allow me to retain my current stadard of living. It would shorten the number of years needed until I retire significantly though, and that's a real good thing.

Not a chance. Assume you get a 5% interest rate. You'll get 50,000 a year of interest alone before taxes. That has to cover ALL living expenses. Unless you dip into your million to be debt free. Say, 300,000. 200,000 on a house and the rest on cars (Truck and Vette). That now leaves you with 700,000. At 5% interest your down to 35,000 a year before taxes BUT with no major debt.
The major downfall is "Idle hands are the work of the devil". If you had NO job you'd have nothing but time. You'd want to vacation, you'd want to go places, do things. That all takes money. I couldnt do it.

Now, if your VERY conservative and VERY level headed and not very materialistic you could do it. But, you'd look just like every other Joe Average around you. Average house, run of the mill cars and alot of free time. But you'll still have all the other bills. Property taxes, insurance, utilities, groceries.
BUT! If you keep working along for, say 10 years. Dont TOUCH the million. You now have 1.5 million! (Roughly). That takes you from 50k a year up to 75k just off interest. Now 75k is nothing to snort at. Plus, in the mean time if you bust your ass you can be nearly debt free in those 10 years less a mortgage payment.

For me, I'd have to keep workin at LEAST 10 years. But its a helluva lot better then the 35 or so I have to go now.

If I Had A Million Dollars
by Barenaked Ladies

Lyrics:

If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
I'd buy you a house
(I would buy you a house)
If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
I'd buy you furniture for your house
(Maybe a nice chesterfield or an ottoman)
And if I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a K-Car
(A nice Reliant automobile)
If I had a million dollars I'd buy your love

If I had a million dollars
I'd build a tree fort in our yard
If I had million dollars
You could help, it wouldn't be that hard
If I had million dollars
Maybe we could put like a little tiny fridge in there somewhere
You know, we could just go up there and hang out
Like open the fridge and stuff
There would already be laid out foods for us
Like little pre-wrapped sausages and things

They have pre-wrapped sausages but they don't have pre-wrapped bacon
Well, can you blame 'em
Uh, yeah

If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a fur coat
(But not a real fur coat that's cruel)
And if I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you an exotic pet
(Yep, like a llama or an emu)
And if I had a million dollars
(If I had a a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you John Merrick's remains
(Ooh, all them crazy elephant bones)
And If I had a million dollars I'd buy your love

If I had a million dollars
We wouldn't have to walk to the store
If I had a million dollars
Now, we'd take a limousine 'cause it costs more
If I had a million dollars
We wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner
But we would eat Kraft Dinner
Of course we would, we’d just eat more
And buy really expensive ketchups with it
That’s right, all the fanciest ke... dijon ketchups!
Mmmmmm, Mmmm-Hmmm

If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a green dress
(But not a real green dress, that's cruel)
And if I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you some art
(A Picasso or a Garfunkel)
If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a monkey
(Haven't you always wanted a monkey)

If I had a million dollars
I’d buy your love

If I had a million dollars, If I had a million dollars
If I had a million dollars, If I had a million dollars
If I had a million dollars
I'd be rich

Start trying to find work the I enjoy that brings in an ok amount of money

No way I could retire off of that. I am only 20.  However I would quit work long enough for me to finish school.  It sucks to work and school full time.

Then I would spot my FIL as much as he needed to buy a shitload of land and build some houses and bank major profit.  He is already a GC and with proper financing we both could retire in 5 years with a massive bank.
