It is a popular myth but not quite as prevelant as the myth.

2. Special Regulations for Military Firearms, Sporting and Hunting Guns
Due to the long tradition and the special organization of the Swiss armed forces as a militia army, special rules are applicable for army weapons. Between their regular annual service of two or three weeks per year, Swiss soldiers and officers keep their personal weapons at home. After they have left the army, they may keep those arms in order to continue practicing at rifle or pistol ranges managed by local communities. Special rules also govern hunting or sporting rifles.


So it's not every male, not even close, but not uncommon either.

No they did not go onto the european money std. the euro.  They still use Swiss Francs.  They still do stops at thier borders and retain interest in thier Sovereignty.  There is european pressure for them to join because the OneEurope needs countries with good financial economies to help bolster the economic damage done by letting in countries like the Chezk Republic.

Swiss crime simply can't be compared to most other countries anyway, due to the fact that immigration there is VERY, VERY controlled.  They are extremely reluctant to allow foreigners to have permanent residencies, and those few who do have to have a needed, advanced skill, and/or must have a whole lot of money in the bank (half-mil or more), to even be considered.  And this has been the case for generations, so there are almost zero race problems, and not many class-warfare problems.  Due to the relative wealth of the country, it's small size and small, homogeneous population, and its combination of capitalism and socialism, there is very little crime.

The fact that shooting guns is basically the national sport, and that military full-auto weapons are kept at home by reservists, is largely irrelevant.
