Best Tom Clancy book?

I haven't read any of his books and want to start one. Which one is the best? Which was the first Jack Ryan one? Any suggestions?

First Jack Ryan = Hunt for Red October.

Best = Without Remorse (Of course that is my opinion)

Red Storm Rising, by far his best work. Too bad it's now a little outdated.

Not to thread hijack, but if you liked RSR, you may want to check out Larry Bond's Red Phoenix, about the invasion of South Korea by the North from sometime back in the 90's. Things haven't changed so much in Korea that the premise is completely outdated...

of course it will never make it to the big screen without a major rewrite,

Absolutely!

I used to like the Jack Ryan books, but that got REAL old about mid way through Rainbow Six.

Start at the beginning- most of his books (probably all but Red Storm Rising, Without Remorse and Rainbow Six) have history to them... That's not to say you couldn't read them separately but I'd go to his website and start with the oldest and work forward.

The good news is you'll be able to find them all pretty easily if you have a used book store near you to save some $$$.

BTW anyone heard when his next book will be out? I skipped the one with his son in it.

The Hunt For Red October

With Clancy, his stuff is either really awesome, or downright mind-numbing. I seem to get the mind-numbing ones. Red October is the only one I read all the way through and would read again, if I could find my copy.

I liked some of the other Jack Ryan movies, so I should see about picking up the books sometime.

I haven't seen the one with Ben Afflek, but the movies are pale comparissons to the books. Clancy was about to take his name off of Clear and Present Danger, it was so f'd up.

Red Storm Rising. Moreso than his other books, he has a tremendous number of characters whose actions, though far apart and seemingly unrelated in the beginning, intertwine in the end. Just a masterfully written story.

I have to go with Without Remorse as well. Now if only he would break down and write a book about the old guys. He has hinted at some interesting exploits in their pasts as well.

whoever here like's red storm rising, they need to check out larry bond because he wrote that book with tom clancy

The Bourne Identity and Supremecy are really good books by Robert Ludlum. I have seen The Bourne Supremecy movie and it kinda sucked, but the original books are awesome.

I'd have to say Red Storm Rising and Without Remorse tie for best. Some of his newer stuff kind of falls off a little, but Rainbow Six was still really good. I didn't think Teeth of the Tiger was such a great read, but the concept was interesting.

I am currently reading a non-fiction work of his. It is a complete walkthrough and history of the most powerful weapon system in the world: the CVBG, also known as the aircraft carrier battle group. The book is called "CARRIER".

Don't forget the latest one, either. It too only has Jack in a bit role.

FWIW, I think the story has played out. I wish he would move on to something new. There wasn't much left to do with Jack once he became president, and now that he's finished that up it's pretty much a dead end.

None. Clancy is the most long winded, over rated author in the history of mankind. His Faux-spook bs is ingested by know-nothings and repeated as truth. Gimme a break.

Another vote for Red Storm Rising. I've read that book - no kidding - around 10 times.

I briefly played the game "Harpoon" on the PC, and thought it was somewhat similar to the book. Checked the front of the book, and Clancy actually talks about the fact that the book was basically a scenario they played out from that very game.
