you're going to get alot of different ideas here, but I think the consensus is that 7.62 is preferable for a clean kill.

If it was a small Texas Whitetail, I would say .223 with a heavy bullet would be fine. If you are hunting larger deer, the Russian round would be better but nowhere near ideal. Get a real deer cartridge for crying out loud. |

I must agree. Just because it can be done, why. Just get a big enough gun that gives you a little 'shitty shot' factor. |

7.62X39 = 30-30. And the 30-30 has probably killed more deer than any other round.

yep another vote for the commie cartridge. And no its not great, its best if kept under 100m for deer.

Would it be fair to say that the 7.62 x 39mm round would be like the 45 auto cartridge, in the sense that it is a slower moving bullet but with more mass so it would have better knockdown power?
I wouldnt use either personally, .243 would be the smallest I would ever use. I use .270 win. mag. in PA for hunting deer. In Ohio I have to use a 12 ga. slug gun or my Ruger super redhawk .454 |

.223 is not legal in many states for deer check your local laws.
7.62x39 would be beat at a 100 yards or less. |

I killed a lot of deer with my SKS, I would have to go with 7.62.

I used my Ruger Mini-30 tp kill my first deer.... and virtually have never used it again. I routinely carry my BM/Armalite carbine for deer here in North Alabama where the deer aren't much bigger than large dogs.
Haven't killed a deer with it yet, but last year a very large bobcat walked up to me that would have been hanging on my wall right if I had known they were legal to kill. Plus I walked up on a doe that would have been meat in the freezer except I thought it was very ill or already wounded. I mean, how many times do you walk up to deer while hunting??? Guys, I'm talking 5-8 feet away and I had to make noise the last few feet to see if the dang thing was going to wake up! I use 64 grain Winchester soft points in my carbine. It'll kill a NA deer if I do my part. Merlin |

"Knock down power" is a myth. For a good description of how bullets work, do a Google search and read the FBI wound ballistics research. Essentially, a hit to the upper spine or brain with almost anything is an instant kill or incapacitation. Otherwise, you're just trying to empty a bag of blood, and even with a well-placed shot it'll take ten or fifteen seconds no matter what you use. I try to put my shots through both lungs (that's my ideal goal, anyway). I've done that with everything from a .223 to a .300 Win Mag, and deer will almost invariably run fifty or a hundred yards, even with no heart or lungs left, until their brain runs out of blood. |

WHAT!! It's treason I tell ya!!! Now get with the program and start chewing those fingernails while simultaneously watching three TV channels and five web sites trying to glean whatever info you can even though you know the results won't be final for weeks.... ETA: I use a .223 for deer, the biggest I have dropped was a 180lb'er. If you use a .223 you have to remember two things, 1. Shot placement is critical, if you can't make a good shot don't even try it. 2. High quality bullets are a must! I have used the 64gr powerpoint but am trying the 65gr gameking this year. |

i've used both. 7.62x39 is much better suited. the .223 is only for headshots. as stated before just b/c its legal doesnt make it a good idea.
