... other than English, in an instant with no effort, what would they be? For the sake of argument, let's say no fictional languages except for Klingon, because there are people who do speak that.

For me, they'd be Biblical Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and Russian.

American.

Oh wait I already speak that.  So I guess I will have to pass on the opportunity to speak any other languages, because anyone worth talking to already speaks my language.

Japanese, Latin, Scots Gaelic, Spanish, probably Mandarin.  Japanese and Mandarin would help me in my martial arts studies.  Latin is the scholars language (at least in the west).  Scot's Gaelic is ancestral, Spainish is growing more and more practical, and while I'm none too happy about it, I believe it will be increasingly necessary to know and understand it.  I took German and French in High School and College, but the Germans and French can go bugger themselves with a cattle prod...at least until they see reason.

So that when you're killing them you can understand and laugh at their pleas for mercy and reply in the appropriate tongue. Why else?

In Chinese…  ??????

In German… Würfelmutterbumser

In Spanish… fucker de la madre del dado

I think that covers all the bases and potential enemies…

Edited to add… Damn! Browser don't support weird Chinese/Arabic writing… anyone know the Chinese/Arabic in roman script?
