I was under the impression that the M-16 family was the most widely produced and had numerical superiority over the AK-47 family.

I don't recall just where I got this info from, probably here. Can someone set me straight?

Here's why I ask-

I don't actually know, but I would guess that there are more AKs.

i would guess the AK47 is in use far more than the M16.
not even counting all the third world countries, you had the Chinese and Russians using it.

I wonder what number three is actually?
Mauser 98 or Nagant?

I think it goes....

AK Clones
AR-15 Clones
FAL Clones

If you include LEO, I'm sure the AR numbers are a lot higher.

Think about this, how many countries produced large amounts of guns and what guns did they make?  then which countries suffered horrible economical problems, creating a black market full of guns?  The collapse of the USSR flooded the world with AK-47s.

AK - 50 million

M16/AR15 - 30 million

As I recall.  Definite edge for the AK & variants

AK by a landslide not even close, after that it probably a Fal or HK91/cetme variant

I kinda meant to say that the FAL and the AR might be close ( there's a reason its the right arm of the free world) and that the FAL's might be close to the AR, but not if you include LEO's.

The FAL is a battle rifle...are we including all rifles or just assault rifles?

AK followed my M98, after that I'm not sure

AK platform without a doubt. The SECOND most common, is where the real contest lies.

Edit: there is NO WAY that the AR platform is anywhere near #2. ONLY the USA and a couple of other western nations use them. Sure, there are the similar weapons that asians use, but they're still entirely different platforms (ie: Daewoo's). AR's just aren't the $50 AK's you can find all over any third world shithole (same goes for WW2 leftover handouts like the massively stockpiled weapons like the Mauser types would probably be #2.).

If you are talking about in the world, AK.

If you are talking about in the US, AR.

A guy I know in Egypt had a relative in the Maadi factory. He told me that his uncle told him that for about 6 years, they produced some thing like 1,000 AK variants a day. That's 2 million or so right there. Even if you reduce that by the Egyptian exaggeration factor by 50%, you're still at a million, and Egypt wasn't even a big consumer/trans-shipper of the damn things. They can be had for $30-$50 in certain parts of various suqs, but ammunition is pretty scarce. If I have to do any considerable time over there again in the future, I'm going to try to arrange a shipment of Wolf to myself.

Also, in 10 years of travel to the Middel East, I've never seen an AK74 variant in Egypt. Hmm.

ETA: Damn PHAROAH smilie still busted!

I would have to go with the Red Ryder being number one.

AKs hands down.  No way in hell does the AR family even come close.  My best guess for the #2 spot would be between the Mauser 98's and the Mosin-Nagant's.

AK out #s Ars by ahuge #

there are between 80 and 100 MILLION AKs (and varients) made worldwide
probably less than 20 million Ars (and varients)

h/w the AR smokes the AK as far as overall 'best'

Discovery (UK) had a program about guns the other night, they said 250 million AKs so far. I dont know about this specific fact but the rest of the stuff they said was true.
