Two days ago I bought a new Springfield S/S Compact 45 Loaded. To be honest with you I went to buy a new Sig P239 or Colt Defender, but he was out of stock. I looked at the Colt 1911 compact, but it just didn't feel right in my hand. After I bought the gun i saw in Gun-Test that they gave the Ultra Compact a "Don't Buy". I was a little upset about seeing the article, but will get over it! How would you rank them?

In terms of .45's, I own a Sig 220, Colt 1911A1, Colt Commander, and a Springfield loaded 1911. In a sentence: the Springfield is my favorite. It is not the most accurate, but it is the absolute most reliable. It's very well made...
You'll enjoy it.

I bought a full size mil-spec Springfield 1911-A1 a month ago and so far so good.

I've had my mil spec. for quite a few years now and its been extremely reliable (as long as I don't use PMC cases/ammo).

You may want to try various ammo and see if there is a particular brand which works best for you.

I reload but i've found that my 1911 has a problem specifically with PMC cases. Why i'm not sure but its good to know what works best as it would be FATAL to find out when you needed it most.

Don't believe want you read. The Springfield is great to own. You do not have that stupid firing pin safety like the Colts. The Springfield frames are great to customize.

The F.B.I likes them...but maybe thats a good reason NOT to buy one. Their decisions of late have been preety BAD!

I have (2) mil-spec Springfield 1911A1's. I bought one new in 1990 and bought a used one just last year. I have found that they are no worst than any other quality manufacturer. The ones I have are mil-spec, so none of that fancey work had been done to them at the factory. I did fine tune them, but nothing major. The first one I bought was for bowling pin and plate shoots. The second one was just a good deal. When I bought the first one, I do not think Springfield had the line of "factory custom" pistols that they offer now??

This is off topic, but I also have a Norinco 1911, and for the $200 price tag, it is a sweet pistol.

I've owned a bunch of Springfields - all were great guns. Don't believe what you read, try it for yourself. I personally like them and would recommend them.

I love my Springfield 1911! I'm actually a better shot with it than my Glock 30, but I don't find it best for carrying.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with a Springfield. I've heard good things about Kimber too, but never owned one.

I own both a Full Size Springfield 1911 and a Springfield V10 Ultra Compact.

Both guns have been extremely reliable.

(I also own Sigs and am just as happy shooting one of my Springfields as I am shooting my Sigs)

I like mine alot but I love my Sig P220 much more. I recall reading a post (with photos) somewhere that showed a Springfield "Kaboom" where the slide actually fractured and broke in 2 pieces.

WOW never seen any gun do that before, anyway i think id get a kimber before a SA, and a colt before a kimber (but thats just me)

you can take out the firing pin safety on the colt converting it from series 80 back to series 70
i got a series 80 slide on my series 70 frame

I have had a couple Springfields, no problems with them. I still shoot a full size SA 1911. Don't know what to say about the pic, could be doctored up, slide could be a fake, or it could be an honest slide failure, never seen a slide fail like that.

I think SA makes a decent pistol. When i was looking it was between the loaded 1911 and a kimber gold match. I went kimber. It just had a better feel to me. I don't think i would buy colt. The dealer i bought my kimber from had 2 colt 1911 he just recieved. both had smooth bore barrells. I know thats not a big thing and is easy to remedy with a phone call. But it screams a lot about their QC here lately

After that picture that will be my last Springfield. Going today to trade it in. The dealer told me he would give me $475 trade in on it. A $150 loss in a few days. I am going to have him order me a new Sig in 40.

I have had my 5 in. S/A 1911 for almost 12 years now. I still carry it daily (with permit) and have never found a pistol that fits my hand better. Shoot it a few times. If you still don't like it you can always sell it and buy something else.

I have a 1911A1 loaded, it is a fine 1911 for the money. They are also good platform for custom work. Mine is getting some trim, now.

It looks pretty scary. What really looks scary is the fact that it LOOKS like the slide is really cast and not forged.

I like mine but haven't shot it much.

I read through the GlockTalk post (link above the picture) but don't know whether or not to get rid of mine.

The photo is doctored. A forging won't fracture like that photo shows. The gain on the end of the slide is a dead giveaway. That's not a forging. It's a casting.

If the slide is going to fail, it will fail around the ejection port. That's the weak area in a slide, and the part that gets hammered.

Springfields have a LIFETIME warranty. Go ahead and get your SIG, but I'd hang on to the Springfield. $150 is a big loss to take on a new gun. Springfields are excellent guns. Top respected gun for rebuild/custom work. Highly regarded in competition.

Don't dump it!

Well, I just got a 2001 ILS V-12 that is a complete POS. Completely inoperative to the point that is a $800 collection of parts.
Last Springfield I'll ever own.

I hope you do not buy cars the same way. I would have held out for a Defender. It is a great gun.

I have a Springfield Armory .45 (Loaded) I am most pleased with it, I shoot it more accurately than my G-19(by far) and about as well as my 96FS which is my favorite auto pistol. As for the picture of the S.A. with the broken slide, a bad one get's out from every maker on occasion. BTW my S.A. has been 100% reliable so far and it is a very fast pistol if it goes another 500 without any type of failure I will trust it as a carry pistol. I think S.A. makes a very high quality product. I'd give it a chance.
