If it didn't knock your glasses off and your nose isn't bleeding you are OK with the factory pad.

I had the same reaction the first time I fired my 835. Try 3 inch shells. Just because something is capable of 3.5 inch shells doesn't mean you have to use them. I killed a turkey at over 35 yards last spring with 3 inch shells out of my 835. Use whatever patterns best out of your gun. Bigger isn't ALWAYS better.
Hope this helps.

There are several companies making new "Super" recoil pads from a elastomeric polymer that reduces felt recoil as much as 30% over other pads.

These are available from Hogue, and Remington.
The Remington R3 is made by LimbSaver.

Dont ruin the look of the gun by putting on another buttpad.  Just get one of the shoulder pads that strap onto your shoulder.  Ya can get em off of cabellas and many many other places.  Plus side of the pad being on you and not the gun is that you can use it with whatever gun is kicking your ass.

I am not sure you know what you are talking about. But you do have a right to your opinion. The only concern I would have is changing the length of pull, which might not even be an issue.

Kick EEZ sorbothane pads

It's the same stuff that goes on the but of the Barret rifles. The stuff is really good.

The only problem is that they're much thicker than the stock pads, so you'll probably need to cut the stock down.

A friend did the stock cutting and fitting for my 870. The pad, plus the barrel porting, plus lighter tactical buckshot loads, and I was feeling fine two days and 600 buck/slug shells while everyone else seemed to be bruised and whining.

My Kick EZZ pad is the same thickness as my stock hard rubber pad.  It just bolted right on.  The recoil impulse is now a longer push, rather than a big jolt.

I just traded off a really nice modestly engaved spanish side by side in ten gauge 3&1/2mag!

It weighed 9&1/2 pounds and had a three inch butt pad!

You could fire it all day long and no bad recoil !  I traded it for a .375 win!

I think it is still in the shop just waiting for me to purchase it again!

The weight of it is what scares people but that is what makes it easy to fire!!!

I had a New England 10 guage that hurt so bad to shoot I traded it for a 50 cal hawken!
