I've got a Halloween party tonight that I need a whiskey suggestion for (host is providing wine, everyone is bringing finger foods, I figure the girls might like something with a little more kick). My buddies have said showing up with Wild Turkey would be bad form (the only bottle of whiskey in my collection at the moment) as not many people are used to it. I've already got the sour mix, ameretto, lemons and limes, couldnt find any cherries.

Normally I go for Jim Beam Black Label, but the store was/is out of all non-handle sized bottles of Beam. Can anyone suggest an alternate? I'd prefer to pay $15 or less for 750ml, no need to impress anybody with some super fancy stuff, the goal is to have a good time while slightly toasted, but I dont want to show up with paint remover either.

Jack's ok in a whiskey sour?
I wasnt a fan of the "normal" Jack neat, so I never bothered to explore it in mixed drinks, or the rest of the Jack line.

gentleman jack is much smoother than black label (as is single barrel), and has more sweetness. i drink it straight-up, but i bet it'd be tasty with some sour mix. funny how jack guys don't like beam at all and vice versa.

If you or anyone you know has access to a Class 6, I am sure all the military folk here will agree that Military Special fine Bourbon whiskey is some of the finest whiskey you will ever have the pleasure of drinking.

W.L. Weller is a good straight bourbon whiskey, my favorite. Wild Turkey is a little better grade not to be wasted on people who know no better. Hell get a 1/2 gallon of Kessler its good ,cheap, getting drunk, whiskey.

For a good cheap bourbon try Evan Williams 10 yr. old (black label with gold writing). Maker's mark is good, knob creek is much better (also sweeter) but is pricier ($25+ for 750mL). Laugh at the name, but 'Fighting Cock' is some good tasting, high proof bourbon and its cheap. If you can find Old Charter, that is a lower proof, smooth drinking, budgetminded bourbon. Everything I just mentioned is a true, aged bourbon that is 8 yrs old or older.

Evam Williams is my "General Purpose" bourbon. It's very drinkable and the price is good. I like the "Green Lable" which is 80 proof. Really though, if you can find it pick up a bottle of Rebel Yell. The vanillas are excellent and the charred oak taste is just right, not over powering. Makers Mark has no vanilla taste and very little if any charred oak taste, mostly like "alcohol" and that's about it. That's why I don't care for it, when I drink bourbon I want vanillas and oak taste.

You are correct. I should have noted that.

I pointed out that it was scotch, because the original poster was looking to replace his Jim Beam which is definitely not scotch whiskey like Johnnie Red is.

In my experience, few people can get drunk on whiskey without getting sick also. It's a gamble as just when that drunk person will choose to get sick.

My suggestion? Bacardi Black Label rum. (I'd suggest Cuban rum but I ain't gonna send you any of mine and it's impossible to buy at your local corner liquor store)

Quite smooth, great taste with just a splash of Coke (NOT Pepsi!).

I've been drinking rum for about 10 years now, have fed copious quantities to dates also, with no adverse effects-other than a hangover for the zealous drinkers.

Maker's is only slightly above your listed price here at least, but may be more where you are.

Definately worth it, it is my everyday whiskey.

Evan William's is decent, and really cheap, but not my favorite.

Knob creek if fscking great, but ill have to kill you if you use it for sours :P

I also don't see any reason wild turkey would be a bad thing, just stick to the 80 proof.

There are many fine suggestions here if you are going to be drinking it straight, but if you are mixing it why not Southern Comfort? There isn't much point in spending a bunch of money on good bourbon if you are going to be mixing it.

I hit the liquor store to pick up some Jack or Knob Creek, it turns out they were just starting to have a sale on white-label Jim Beam ($18/handle) today. Its no Black Label, but its good enough for tonight.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll give Makers Mark and Knob Creek a try in the near future.

Not only is Johnny Walker Red scotch whiskey its blended scotch whiskey...dont waste your time/money with it,..if your gunna pay a primo price for Johnny Walker only Johnny Walker Black will do($30)

especially if your talkin Whiskey Sours. Its the only whiskey ill drink other than Jameson.

Now if you feel a bit crazy and like the taste of pure whiskey exctasy>>your talkin about $130 per 750ml

Fleshmans blended whiskey, its not expensive, ya can drink it strait non stop. and its excellant for mixing too. I use Southern Comfort for "sours" get the 80 pf, it just makes the sour taste better, and its cheaper. Bottoms-Up...blade409
