think of it this way.....would "black trash" be a racial slur?
It depends what color you are and what company you are in. Jsut like the N word. It's okay to say if you're black, but not if you're white. |

Locally we have a road called the 'Powhite Parkway", pronounced po-white and not pow-hite. The joke is that if you get a ticket for littering on this road, that you were charged for being involved with 'powhite trash'.

Depends on how it is used and by whom. Much like other derogatory words in common use by various races, it is all in what is meant. If it is based in some sort of fact, it probably isn't anymore offensive than anything else. If someone of another race who I didn't know(or my race for that matter) called me White Trash I would be no less offended than a homosexual who was just called a faggot, or a black person who was called a n*****.

Personally I feel that all three of those are racial slurs along the same line as the N word. As I Southerner, who has family in West Virginia (my father was born and raised in WV), and lives in a Double wide, I may be a little sensative to those epitephs. I in no way identify with those remarks, I work hard, know how to read and write, I don't chew tobaco, or listen to Country Music, I don't even watch Nascar Racing, but I don't use the N word, kike, beaner, WOP, mick, or any other racial insults to identify those who are of a particular background, and i don't appreciate being sterotyped by others including more affluent white people either. |

Hmmmm, I think this may be at the heart of it. I've never really understood all the government effort to change my vocabulary to a more sensative one. I'm a blue eyed, white Southerner and none of the previously mentioned names bothers me much. In fact, when called cracker, ridgerunner, white trash etc.,etc.,etc., I kind of tend to play it up for all its worth. Seems to piss'em off even more. |

The sound of white peoples voices is the source of this term. White people tend to speak with a higher pitched voice than those of African decent, so to a non english speaker of African decent a white persons voice could be described as "honking". |

"White trash" is a factually descriptive term in many cases. It's not a slur, just truth.
