Hey you math wizards.  I didn't pass much of pre-algebra and certainly don't know how to do fancy stuff like what I'm about to ask:

I have a gas tank that is 5 gallons.  I need to mix it with oil to make the proper fuel in a 30:1 ratio.  If I have 5 gallons of gas in the gas tank and need to put 1 part of oil per 30 parts gas how much oil do i need to put in, in iters, quarts, pints, or whatever.

Thanks for your help, jeanesesses.

I'm gonna take a guess(cause I suck at math also) but I think you would need 0.167 gallons of oil added to the 5 gallons of gas to make a 30:1 ratio

If it is for a small engine, you aren't supposed to store the gas more than a few weeks, if you can't use it all.

5 gallons gas . . 30 parts gas
--------------- = --------------
? gallons oil . .  . 1  part oil

you need any of the following...
.167 gallons oil is how much you need.
or 21.376 fluid ounces
or .6680 quarts

Just dump all the oil you got in there.

What are you putting in it?

You need 6 gallons of gas.

21.33 oz. to 640 oz.

1 gallon = 128 oz.

640 oz. = 100%    21.33 is 1/30 of 640 oz.

1/6 gallon = 2/3 quart

I dunno.  It's a guess.

30/1 = 5/x

30/1 = (5/x)*6

30/1 = 30/6x

6x/6 =1/6

x=1/6

30:1, 5gallon gas

add 21.3 oz or .66 quarts of oil.

Someone might want to double check this before you use it

ACTUALLY, If your total desired volume is 5 gallons, then your mixture should be:
20.645 oz of oil and 619.355 oz. of fuel

128x5=640

640/31=20.645  which is the abmount of oil to use
640-20.645=619.355 oz of fuel to make a mixture with a total volume of 5 gallons.

The other way is still a 30:1 mixture, but your total volume will be 5 gallons, 21.376 oz.  or 661.376 oz.
