Ok, here's a question. Can anyone here out shoot their Dad

Yes I can out shoot my dad. He hasn't shot a firearm in 10 years or more, and then it was only because I'd make him take me to the range.

My dad was the one who taught me to shoot (still qualify expert in the military) but since he was crippled when I was in the 8th grade he hasn't been able to shoot since

So, I guess the question was more of a reminder for people to appreciate their dad's who taught them how to shoot.

My Dad, when he was alive never shot with me

He did give me my first rifle, a old Winchester Model 67 .22

But I have been told by Aunts and Uncles that he never picked up another firearm after he Came home from Korea in 1953, he had enough

So I will never know

My dad doesn't shoot much anymore, he's got some medical issues. Last father's day I take him to the range. I empty a box of wichester at 25 yards with my G21, all over the paper plate. He pulls out his P7, one shot dead center fast from the side, next one touching it. Says, "Yep I can still shoot"

Same thing with my AR vs his ruger .44 carbine at 100yds.

I'd put Pop in his prime up against anyone, Carlos Hathcock included, no BS. It's not just rifles and pistols either. He shoots squirrels in his backyard with a Benjamin air pistol making shots I would have to use my 10/22 for. In the 60's he was beaten for the Mississippi skeet shoting championship only by the guy who ended up winning the Olympics (4th round of the shoot-off)

Haven't talked to him since I was 12. He lives back in NYC.

Dad died when I was 6mo. old. At that time, I doubt I could outshoot him.

Now, pretty sure I can.

Like I said I was in 8th grade at the time but even now I seriously doubt if my father was healty I could hold a candle to him when I shoot.

I'm better than my dad with pistols(marksmanship) and rifles(semiauto's like AR's AK's), he is a badass with a scoped rifle, and he's the quickest draw with a pistol of anyone I know or have seen, in fact he doesn't brag, but he's just a badass with firearms

I could always out shoot him with a pistol but never with a rifle or shotgun.
I could probably out shoot him now due to failing eyesight but would never do so, too much respect.
I had this conversation with one of my coworkers the other day. My dad comes over to my house often and is usually there after I qualify on our range. He'll ask how I did I usually reply 98.6 sometimes in the 97 range. He'll reply "whats the matter you forgot what this is all about?"

My dad is a hunting machine!...makes all kinds of hell mary type shots...

That being said, I can outshoot him anyday of the week at normal plinking or target shooting, I have been able to outshoot him since I was 12...He and my grandpa taught me to shoot, and we have shot together for many years. Now the guy in our family that can shoot is my Grandpa, that SOB can hit tennis balls with a .38 at unk distance out to 100 yds..NO SHIT!...The guy has been shooting on the Sheriffs Dept. Pistol team since the mid 60's and still shoots with them after being retired.

My dad doesn't own any guns, though that will change soon. He did amazingly well the first time he ever shot a rifle - an old Western Field .22. So well in fact, that I wouldn't be suprised if he was able to out shoot me in a year, if he wanted to. Natural born killer, and he doesn't even know it...

I think he's got some natural ability. It's a shame that we didn't go shooting when I was a kid. I'm glad we get to do it now.

A comment, no hijack intended.

Can you imagine what kind of thread it would be over on DU that would have guys saying such wonderful and respectful things about their Dads as what you can see here so often ?

A lot of you people give me hope for the US when I see how you are.

And THAT's another of the many great things I see here on ARFCOM.

In his day, my father was on one of the Army's rifle teams. Nowadays, his muscles are trembling and his bones are brittle.

Yeah, I can outshoot him today, but I doubt that I've ever been even close to his peak ability.

My father's got me on the pistol range and with scoped rifles, but with Irons at distance I think I've got him...but my eyes are 25 years old and 20/20, so...no I don't think I can out shoot my Dad...

Pretty much same here. Of course, I have never observed my dad firing any weapons. The last time he got his hands on any small arms was probably back around 88-91 when he commanded a Forward Air Control unit. He probably got trigger time on M9, M4s and maybe MP5s... not sure what they were issued. Luckily he was only on reserve to go to Iraq during round 1.

Someday I need to take him to the range with me.

my father is long gone from this planet and ww2 gave him a belly full of guns, shooting and killing.

he taught me how to shoot, among many other things, despite the fact he was not really much into guns. so, from an early age i could out score my father (as could my brother) simply because of the frequent practice we got.

Depends on the day and the weapon of choice. He taught me but I also got some extra training from the schools of boys and more trigger time. Great man and I loved outshooting him at the last reunion on the skeet range.

I thought most here had to be 18 first

hehe..........NO sadly my father's last trip to the range w/me he could'nt control the MGunz muzzle rise on FA. He used to idolize his gm/mp40. Being good at the range requires patience, thats why you see women doing better than their male counterparts. Getting old SUX!

Now I can. But that is a recent development as his eyesight has weakened.

That said, I have a feeling if I handed him a Garand, things would be different. Since he carried one for a while in the South Pacific, I'm guessing he would still blow my doors off on the range.

Yes I can. He taught me the basics, then the Marine Corps and a few private sector instructors took over from there. Tens of thousands of rounds downrange later, here I am.

Both trained killers. Both learned to shoot in the Marines (and hunting).

He can certainly hit what he wants to, but I have a ton more match experience.

My Grandfather and Father both tought me how to shoot rifles and shotguns. I picked up shooting handguns on my own and with some instruction from various others.

When it comes to shooting rifles or shotguns my father will out shoot me all day long. I can't really say it is even fair to compare us in handgun shooting as he only owns two .22LR handguns and just doesn't care to shoot handguns much. While I regulary practice with my various handguns and have reached a point that far exceeds his ability...but only because he chooses not to shoot them.

My Grandfather is gone now, he was a WW2 vet and had plenty of trigger time on a Garand, Thompson, and 1911. He grew up learning to shoot for food and then later on (WW2) for survival. Me, I have never had to actually pull the trigger for survival, but he did. With that said.... I know he could shoot better than me and I will never think that I became a better shot than he was.

I left my US Army marked 1911 sitting on top of his TV one day when I was visiting. The 1911 is all fancy nickel plated with custom grips and so on. He picked it up..held it in his hand as you would hold it when shooting...turned it over...looked at it for a moment and then he said "That's alot nicer than the one I used." He then placed it back on the TV and walked into the other room.

Dad passed when I was 8, although he did indeed teach me some basics. I have seen him shoot a walnut off a tree at 20 yards with an old Mossberg 22.

If he were alive and healthy today, I could give him a hell of a run for his money.
