I've always heard that Kawasakis are craptastic... but I wouldn't know because I have never riden a Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, etc. motorcycle

The KLR is a great bike! If you are big enough to ride it it will get you where you want to go. Mine is a 2000 model (bought Sept 99) and has nearly 30,000 miles on it. On my third final drive and set of tires. Cruises nicely at 70mph, gets pretty scary at 105mph, gets 50mpg on a 6 gallon tank. With the right sprockets and tires you can do most anything you need to do within reason.
These pics are from my summer trip down the Natchez Trace. Went from Kentucky down to Vicksburg, Mississippi, a 1150 mile round trip. Once your butt goes numb from that vibrating 651cc single cylinder engine you can go all day.
