I am not so concerned on sending them.  The old fax machine we have still does that effectively, but I am sick of paper jams on incoming.

I have used WINFaxPro for years.  I have stuck with it since my first computer ran Win3.X.  While it may not be necessary, I am familiar with its set-up.

Cheyenne Bitware. I've used this program before. It's pretty good, and it's free!

where do you go to load it? Im curious about this myself. Does the fax get attached in an email or does it output to a printer? Also, does the computer have to be on all the time to recieve?

I do my faxing at work, but it would be nice to do it at home instead.

ditto.

Will it work with a digital cable connection or does it have to have a telephone number to identify the recipient? I would LOVE to drop my dedicated fax line. It costs me an additional phone line charge each month.

Just loaded up the program.  I went to my computer, then add remove program files, then on the left add remove windows components.  There is a fax option there, just put in the windows disk and it will load up.  It puts the program under the accessories folder in the start menu.

Seems to work pretty good.  Thanks.

Ahhhh... This is great.  We used to get about 20 crap faxes a day (win a trip here, blah blah blah).  Well now we only print the legit ones.

Why in the world is the fax machine even still being sold? A scanner and email works faster, and better.

And of course email allows for color photos/graphics and many other possibilities that just aren't possible via FAX.

Good info. Just a slight correction. Canon has come out with a color fax but the recipient also has to have a color fax to recieve doc in color as well. I agree, with computers, scanners and email, faxing is going to become a thing of the past. You wouldn't believe how many people still buys fax machine still.

Most modems come with fax software.  IF you have it enabled, it will "listen" to incoming phonecalls, after X rings it picks up and tries to establish a "handshake" with a fax machine on the call.  (You hear that sometimes when you call somebody who isn't home and their fax/computer answers).  If it establishes fax to fax communications it sends an OK to the other machine and receives the fax. Depending on how you set-it up it will save to disk or direct to your printer/fax.

You don't need to have a dedicated line.  You can also do a manual handshake.  They dial the number and when you pick it up, you enable your fax set-up and tell them to send.

Working in IT, I have run into users that don't have the patience or intuition to scan a doc, save it, then attach it to an email.  They are so used to dropping the paper in, typing a number, and pushing send, anything else, even something that makes more sense is heartache and pain.

Uh, that would be "sheeple".
