Need some new shoes, looking for a mid-cut hiking/trail boot.  Comfort and durability are key, water proof is a plus but not a must.  They aren't going to see any serious abuse.  Mostly daily wear, range wear and occasional light hiking use.  Any suggestions?  Are there any good websites for reviews of footwear or hiking gear?

Is cost/value a consideration.  I've got a buddy who only buys cheap closeouts from Big-5.  He gets Hi-Tecs and Novados hikers and likes them.

I look for Polyurethane midsoles and quality upper materials and construction.  Chaco makes some very nice boots in addition to their sandals, but they are $pendy and on the heavy side.

You might check out www.wellco.com.  Their boots are military contract and/or military style, but their prices are great.  A lot of people on some of the other boards I frequent swear by them...

Merrell Pulse

I really like mine, they are waterproof and have been durable for daily wear at work. I am a golf course superintendent so they get wet almost daily plus muddy and sprayed with chemicals. They have held up for about 6 months so far with no problems.

Cost under $100 would be preferable.  But I'm willing to pay a little more if it's a really good boot.

I was looking at the Merrells (can't remember the model), I'll have to try those on.

Anyone have any Salomons?  Any good?
