nope... actually thats when the problem started... I had a HUGE spyware problem, and to delete all the crap I ran a diagnostic startup... and when I did that, I couldnt log on.
F8 safe mode, same shit. log on, immediately log off. |

reinstall windows, but don't reformat the drive.
Do a repair install basically. |

ok..... that will save the files? the other problem with this is I have very little space left on the HD... does this matter?: or will it just install right over the old OS? |

"Repair" on all of the XP Dell CD's I have takes you to a command prompt. Is there some sort of secret way to get the OEM boot CD's to do a reinstall? I certainly couldn't find it nor could two other people I had look at it nor could Dell's tech support. I've been reinstalling a system from scratch every two weeks or so, so I'd appreciate any help.z |

Of course, just do as already suggested, re-fresh reinstall. You'll lose your profile and will have to re-install your apps, but you'll have all the actual files on your computer still. If you have a start-up disk for say, Dell, hopefully you have an option to NOT format your drive, and you'll get the same effect as previously stated. |

If you have access to a second PC (yours or a friend's), rip your hard drive out of your PC and install it in the second PC as a slave disk. Boot the PC. Your disk will show up as drive D: or whatever on the second PC. Copy the files you want to save to the C drive of PC 1 (or burn to CD or whatever).

\im sure the root cause of the problem willl still be there, but as long as i can get in to copy the files to a external HD its good to go. |

I had that same problem in a lab of Dell GX240s at my worksite. Had to 're-image' the computers as I could find no way to fix that problem.

Ok, boot up with the XP cd and go through like you are going to re-install. DO NOT choose the 'R' for the repair console, this takes you to a command line interface. Once past this it will continue and give you another chance to do a repair. PICK THIS ONE. If you get asked if you want to delete a partition or the like, YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR. I successfully repaired Mrs. ByteTheBullet's PC this past weekend using this. Oh, I am a computer nerd by trade if you don't already know. This isn't guaranteed to work but it is your best bet next to a complete reinstall. You can put your hard drive in another PC to get your files off -OR- buy a new drive install XP on it and then put your 'screwed' drive in as a slave drive.
There are other options, but these look best for you right now. ByteTheBullet (-: |

My suggestion exactly. Had the same thing happen to a guy last week and lent him my handy-dandy Knoppix Live Linux on a CD ROM. You set the computer's BIOS to boot from CD, slam the Knoppix distribution of Linux in and boot from the CD. It will do no harm at all to the PC's hard drive but it will allow you to open the hard drive and move files - via the LAN to another computer or to floppies etc. Pull the Linux disk out and then you can format your Windoze machine. |

If it asks you about formatting or deleting a partition, back out and look for repair on a previous screen. You have to 'agree' to delete a partition, so don't. These really are the directions as best I can remember without being able to go through the screens again. Is your friend computer literate? Oh, the re-imaging they are talking about is using the restore CDs that come with a new name brand system. What kind of system is it? How new/old is it? ByteTheBullet (-: |

yea the kid who is coming over is pretty good with computers... he built the computer in question, about 2 yrs ago. I forgot all the specifics but its an AMD athlon processer, I think its 2.0 ghz |

You might have to do a parallel OS installation, which would essentially have two XP OS's on the disk, both "pointing" to the same file addresses. This would allow you to access the files & back them up through the temp installed OS, then you can run a format+install, which will start you at "ground zero" again. Naturally, whatever you don't back up will essentially be toast after the format+install is done.

I would cry if I had to try to recover from a catastrophic hard drive failure...and I KNOW I should back up, I tell people every day to do it.  for some reason the sound card is not being recognized, but whatever... it looks like the files are all good. |
