We're looking for a digital camera in the $200-300 range.  I realize this question might get asked here a lot, but it's also one where the answer might change ever few months.

I don't know a lot about cameras, so I need to ask how modern digital zooms are versus optical zooms.  I don't know what the price point is for optical zooms, but my guess is it's under what we want to pay.

Any thought and recommendations would be appreciated.

We'd like to buy later this week, so maybe I can finally post some of my own (versus moochin' off my shootin' buddy) photos of all those guns that I lost in the tragic boating accident last year.

Thanks,

Corey

I have a Minolta SLR that is almost 20 years old and it still works. I still use it. Buy Minolta stuff now. Almost all of it is designed by Minolta and not Konica (sp?).

Ya think that one looks good, look at the review for the Z2 model. I'm thinking hard about retiring my Sony MVC-CD250 in favor of it. Btw, when you buy, you should seriously consider newegg.

Newegg.com  Great prices, and service to match. They will be getting ALL of my PC hardware business from now on.

Picked up a FUJIFILM A340 at BestBuy a few weeks ago.  Was $160.  Figure I don't use it much at all, just wanted one.  So, I got close to the cheapest thing they have.  Works like a champ so far.

I just bought a Minolta DiMAGE Z3.  Little more money but a great camera.

In the $200-$300 range I'd strongly suggest the Canon A85.

($260 once you add it to your shopping cart)

If you want a used Canon A70 3.2MP (Info: www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_a70.asp) I'll sell you mine for $160.

I'm currently using an old Canon S45 digi and a Canon EOS 3 35mm setup

Oh... and Digital zoom SUCKS. Optical optical optical optical!!!!

That camera just feels horrible in my hands.  And the ergonomics are all screwed up.

If you want lots of zoom, check out the Fuji Finepix S5000.  10X optical zoom, 3.2MP.  Looks and feels exactly like an SLR.  I paid $350 about 8 months ago.  Probably even less now.

The Finepix S3000 is also a nice camera.  6X optical zoom.  Can be had for $250 or less.

Okay, tell me about this guy:

Fuji FinePix S5000

I like the traditional looks and operation of this camera.

Is it a decent camera?

PS  And as usual, I'm already busting my budget.  Of course this is not unusual when I ask for advice from you folks.
