We're shopping for insurance right now for the house we're building, and I know that some insurance companies have a cap on how much they will pay to have guns replaced. For my renters insurance right now with State Farm, they have a cap of like $5k for what they will pay for guns. You can buy supplemental insurance to cover your guns, but I would like to just go with a company that doesn't have any gun clause.

If you have any recommendations, lemme know!

I think you'll find there are standard caps on all sorts of things, jewelry, computers, guns, and collectibles like Barbie or GI Joe collections.

Just get a rider for the guns..it'll cost a little bit extra, but then they'll be covered past the cap.

Allstate has a 2k cap, but you can buy a supplemental for it, it was $69 for a $10,000 add on for a total of $12,000.

No they don't. A friend of mine had to make a claim. He was told that he lives in a "high crime" area and wasn't covered.
He lived on the outskirts of Nashville Tn.

I had a rider on my state farm policy - it had a cap of $5000 per item and a total stated value of $40,000.

But that was pre- Brady.

I'm with Farmers Insurance and they cover $4000 worth of firearms in the standard policy at no charge.

I have much more in firearms and had to buy an insurance rider which I think (off the top of my head ) was $100/yr for an additional $4000 of firearms.

And the way things are going I'm going to have to purchase another hundered bucks worth....

Mayby I should sell some guns..... NAWWW - what was I thinking!!!!

edit for spelling - cause I know the spelling Nazies are out there....

USAA but if you have a collection you need to get a rider, just like any other high value collection.

Really?  Do you have more details other than a second-hand anecdote?

I have my policy with MetLife.  The cap for firearms is $2500 I think.  Not nearly enough.

If you are a veteran, you may be able to get coverage from Armed Forces Insurance Exchange.

These people are unbelievable. You tell THEM what the weapon is worth, and they insure it for like $4 for every $1000 of coverage with no limit.

The only snag is, if you suffer a loss, they will either replace the item with an exact (or equivalent) model OR pay you what such a replacement would have cost, OR what you insured it for, WHICHEVER IS LESS.

I've had to do two claims with them in the past (one fried computer and one stolen ring), and it was no-questions-asked, hyper-fast service.

In that regard, they even beat out USAA, and THAT ALONE speaks volumes!

Buy a good safe and keep your mouth shut about what you have in it or the fact you even have a safe at all.

Here's what you want to know before you buy, from none other than John Ross:

That's your best insurance policy, but the biggest you can afford to make sure it is plenty heavy.

My USAA policies (both my homeowner's and befroe that the Renter's policy) had a cap on the value of firearms unless they were scheduled by serial number and appraised .  If you wanted the full value you had to list them.  Of course the policies do vary state to state.  Call and ask them and they will tell you what they offer in your state.
