I bought one at wal-mart a week ago, they are on close-out. it was a sanyo DVD/VCR combo for 199.99. Take a look, you might get lucky, I'm very happy with mine so far. been using it alot.

For $200, your best bet is probably an Emerson...they sell for about $179 at WalMart. If you could afford $300, I'd go for the Panasonic.

If you want something that is a stand alone DVD recorder you are going to spend at least $400.

I've followed their rankings buying the top analog to digital converter, DVR-R burner, my capture, editing, and authoring software. My set up Panasonic AG-W1 VHS Sony SL HF-600 Betamax JVC XN-V312 DVD/VCD Canopus ADVC-100 Scene Analyzer Live Adobe Premier TMPGEnc Xpress Nero Burning ROM Pioneer DVR-A04/104 The problem with desktop stand alone DVD-R machines is that they record in 1x speed as they're expecting a real time video input. Have a look at the Panasonic DMR-E55 at about $350. I don't think you can find even a POS recorder for $200. |

Not true. WalMart sells the Emerson stand-alone DVD recorder for under $200. Circuit City or Best Buy or most electronic stores sell stand-alone Panasonic DVD recorders for under $300. |

I think the operative word in KA3B's sentence was "want". I wouldn't waste my time or money with a POS Emerson that's going to end up in a land fill in a year.

Thanks my DVR with Tivo has a 40GB hard drive. I just want to be able to record movies to a DVD from it.

40GB? That's only about 12 hours of video. I can't fit all 18; 1 hr practice sessions, 1.5hr Qualifying Sessions, and 2.5hr F-1 Races, on a 250Gb harddrive. Come on cheap dual layer DVDRs! |

It has up to 35 hours recording time depending on type of programs recorded. ? Probably less with the amount of explosions and shots fired.

I would of suggested that you buy the Tivo/DVD recorder in one unit instead of hainv to mess with two.

Yes, unfortunatly I feel for the ad and thought a DVR with Tivo would also record onto DVDs My bad.

The thing is, I don't believe anyone makes a DirecTV receiver with both tivo AND a DVD burner. You can get a DVD burner with tivo (or just a hard drive with no tivo service) OR a receiver with tivo, but not both. So you are getting the right setup. Like I said, if you wanna spend $200, get the Emerson. It's not a "name" but it will do all right for the price. If you can spend a bit more, get the Panasonic for $299 (last time I saw it at Circuit City, it was on special for $280). |
