Quoted: and it makes me feel like less of a person. I want to get one or the other. I presently can't get both. I will probably have to either layaway them or piece one together over a couple of months. Whick would you choose? The closest thing to an AR I have in caliber and type is a mini-14. The closest thing to a 1911 would be.... well hell I don't know I have various semi autos, but not a .45. I don't have a single action semi auto either.
If you were a gun nut such as myself and didn't own two of the required guns, which would you pick?

Don't worry about it. Now, don't get me wrong here...I love 1911s and own several. However, they are not the be-all end-all handgun. The same is to be said for the AR15. I have a couple, I love em, they are great fun to shoot. Owning ARs is kind of like playing Barbie for men. Accessorize! Hell, that's half the fun of owning an AR...buying all the HSLD gear to go on it or make it run better. I also own two Mini-14s and I happen to think that they are fantastic little rifles. Where the AR-type rifles get the one-up on the Minis is in the aftermarket. There just isn't as much SecretAgentTacticalNinjaOperator junk to hang off a mini-14.
If you gave me a box stock Mini-14 and a ruger GP-100 and sent me out into the woods to survive, I'd be just fine.
From a practical standpoint, my gut instinct would be to go for an AR if you feel you just have to have one of the two. First, you already own a .223, so commonality of ammo is a good thing. Secondly...there is all manner of stuff you can do with an AR. You already have other semi-auto handguns, so you have the CCW issue covered, if you live in a CCW state.
Of course, real men shoot shoot .308s, so you should junk the whole AR idea and buy an M1A.
