This is why I support space colonization.
If you are lvinig on some lifeless, airless rock, an asteroid or a volcano becomes a non factor unless you are living righg at ground zero. Without an atmosphere, these become local and not planetary events. Humanity needs to back up its hard drive. |

Oh, ........ didn't you hear? The 18 year olds are now 23 year olds, and they found out about palimony at "womens studies" at the local college. So they sued me and took over the silo. Seems some of those bitches were neither totally straight nor virgins. (damn carpet munchers) (yeah, ... I thought having bi girlfriends was cool at first too) So now they have the silo, and I live in a one bedroom apartment near a strip mall off Highway 93. Those bastards.........thats horrible Zen........just horrible........that silo was the only dream I had going for me in life - that there was, in fact, a secret commune of nubile giggling 18 year old virgin girls running around cleaning FAL's as the came off the range.....Sigh......what is one to do?

Funny story........I once drank cheap champaign out of an eighteen year old girls (you know what) as well - usually during a nice long shared dinner of spiced lamb shanks at my remote hillside compoundl. I no longer drink upon the red wine - the aftertaste of fish that one night is still ripe in my mind. This would follow by a long night of making passionate love on my reloading table next to my lifetime collection of Soldier of Fortune magazines. She tried to incorporate a demilled RPG round into a sex session once, I however was NOT down with that - the most ridiculous sex toy I have ever seen........she eventually left me for her true love - moolighting as a porn star for chicks-with-guns calendars which are ever present amount todays survivalists. I still occasionally delve into my bizarre lifestyle while TAD/TDY to different parts of America fighting the war on error.......I mean Terror......thats what I said. It is not uncommon for me to use my smooth Don Juan skills on a recent South American immigrant maid working at the local Hilton. I actually disagree. If you were out of the blast zone, you could have food stored to last a few years and survive it. And storing grain and beans and other sundries isn't that expensive or that hard. For the price of a good AR you can store many years worth of grain. If this ever happens, you will need ALOT more than a few years of food stocked up. This would last for decades! Edited to add: The sun would be blocked for decades, you couldn't store enough food for that. And that is assuming you and your stockpile survive the mass panic/riots/ect |

Again, I repectfully disagree. The last one (75000 years ago) didn't kill everyone off and they did not have the storage capability that we do. Also, the narrarator of this program said it would screw up the growing season for a few years, not decades. Grain, is cheap. And canning it is easy. It could be survived. You also have to remember that these "primitive humans" were already used to fending for themselves. People today are lazy, like the ARFCOM guy that had a lady offer him $5 to clean her winshield. If the mall isn't open I don't know how most would servive. Most people can't make it in modern times because they don't want to do anything for themselves, I couldn't imagine them lasting a week. I under stand your argument about food storage, but seriously who has that kind of food/water supply. Sure most people here have some MRE's, 55 gal Drums of water and some medical supplies, but how long would that last. ARFCOM'ers certainly have a better chance than most, but I don't think that would last. Most people would simply die with no power, A/C or Heat, let alone trying to find food. They said the last super volcano to erupt caused a 5 degree temp drop on average, and I believe he said that was enough to turn summer into winter in most areas. I truly believe if this happened it would last for atleast 10 years, but lests say it was only 5... I think the outcome would be the same. |

Certainly most people will be toast if anything like this ever occurs. (doubtful in our lifetimes) Probably 99% will perish. But govt people will survive in their bunkers and some hardcore survivalists will survive to procreate. I think he talked about a couple (or maybe three) growing seasons that would be affected. But lets say five for arguments sake. I think you might be surprised how many people (in my state alone) have a ten year supply of food and essentials stored. (they number in the thousands in my state alone) And we're not talking about storing MacDonalds cheeseburgers here. We are talking about basic grain storage etc. Much cheaper to store, and will last possibly as much as a century or more. As for water, though you would need a supply, you would not need several years worth. There would be water around after such an event. And water is cheap pre-catastorphy. Storing the food is more a matter of will than anything else. It is a matter of making choices. (storing food or buy a bunch of yuppie useless crap) It does cost some money, but it can be done on a monthly budget basis, a bit at a time. It is daunting. And it is easy to have a "it can't be done" attitude about it and just give up. But, ..... there will be prepared people who will survive. More than you might think. When Mt. St. Helens went off in the 80's, something like 1 cubic km of material was launched into the atmosphere. Last time Yellowstone blew, someting like 1500 cubic km of material went up. This was probably responsible for an ice age. If it goes, we won't have to worry about it.
