I have always wanted an M1 Carbine.  I don't want a collectors item and could care less about it playing a role in WWII and Korea.

Who makes a good shooter model?

I've had a Universal model for almost 30 years that has never let me down. Of course, I only use USGI mags in it.

A lot of people have talked about problems with these, but mine has worked every time I pull the trigger - no failures of any kind.

Just my 2 cents.....

Isn't the Universal a "post war" model and not in produciton anymore?  That will be great if I can find one.

Are there any current production makers?

Add me to the list as well.  After seeing the paratrooper M1 Carbine on Band of Brothers, I'm looking at creating a replica of that variant.  The expiration of the silly AWB makes it much easier to do now.  If I recall there was a company making this rifle new.  I think it may have been IMI?  It's been a while since I've investigated the M1 carbine.

Regards,

Gary

I wanted a shooter for my daughter so I put one together using a new reciever from Springfield Armory and all USGI parts from the CMP.  Used an unissued GI stock (from Orion?) that I refinished myself.

It shoots like a champ and is very nice to look at.

My 16 year old little girl is deadly with it out to 150 yrds or so.  She should be, she's been shooting it since she was 8.

These are just great fun - I shot one for the first time at the last MODCC get together.  The kid I took along has two inherited from his Grandpa.  I'm pretty sure I need one, also.

I am not sure, but I believe the IMI rifles are crap. I have read a few reviews and that seems to be the consensus. I wish I could provide links, but I can't.

I also want to add an m-1 carbine to my collection.

I have seen parts kits and receivers in shotgun News, I might go that route, I kind of like building my own rifles...

USGI is the Only way to go, If you look around you can find one for $4-500 or so.

I have an IAI M1 carbine and it is perfect.  The NRA gave it high marks in the monthly NRA magazine about a year or two.  I believe the accuracy was what impressed them the most.  I paid $375 for mine from AIM surplus, but they usually are around $500 now.

I've got a WWII era GM paratrooper sidefolder made in 1944. With all the original accessories case, sling, mags, claening kit, mag dust covers and 800 rouns of ammo, it cost me $200.

its a nice gun
i actually like the erogronamics and 'alo-scholl' style of the m-1 carbine

but the round sucks, exspecially in fmj; the 110 soft points are a lot bettter, but they still are kinda anemic for a .30 round

My father has a Rockola M1 and I loved shooting it as a kid, so I recently got an Auto-Ordanance as soon as they came out, and its now got about 1,000 rounds through it. The price for it was $450 with 1x 15rd magazine and an Instruction manual.

I have tried several mil-spec parts and so far all seem to work well. I have also replaced the stock with paratrooper wire stock, but the stock needed just a little bit of inletting.

All in all it makes for a handy truck gun, and I dont have any problems with using Soft points or FMJ in it.

Hope that helps you out
