While channel surfing last night, I stopped on AMC's airing of The Green Berets...
Besides all of the soldiers running around with their finger on the trigger, John Wayne smashes an M16 rifle against a tree after seeing one of his troops dead from a knife wound. I noticed the rifle John Wayne was holding didn't look right; the magazine looked too large for the weapon and it had holes cut in it, sort of like speaker sound holes... Anybody else notice this? Was it one of them plastic Mattel toy rifles that had the reproduced machine gun sound?

Its on right now on AMC. Have you noticed how small an M16 looks in the hands of the Duke? His hand covered most of the lower and upper receiver when he was holding it. He was one big dude.

I used to have one of those M16 Marauders.
Somewhere around here I have a photo of me...in training pants, mind you!....with mine. I guess I must have been three or four, back when I was living in Okinawa as my father was stationed at Kadena AFB. Who'd have thought that if it had been kept in mint condition it'd be worth that much to somebody? CJ |

It is VERY interesting what kind of threads you will find here at ARFCOM. I was just about ready to start a new thread on how bad this movie sucked! Now don't get me wrong , when I was a kid I would watch this movie and sit there in front of the T.V. GLUED to the screen till it was over.I've seen this movie probably 100 times at least. It just seemed to start sucking when I realized all of the bad weapon handling , after that the acting was horrid! In one scene the Duke and some General were shooting clay pigeons and (they each shoot just once!) when John Wayne's turn is up he barely gets the gun to his shoulder whan he says "PULL!" and lets fly a round acting like it was a 4 guage in recoil. In another part he covers his entire staff w/his weapon holding it UPSIDE DOWN AND BACKWARDS!!!!!When they are getting overrun he is saying "Fall back,fall back" Like he's tired of selling hotdogs on a hot day at a ball game. Oh well, I guess I've just become too critical in my old age.I'll probably watch it again when it comes on.Take care.

The only thing John Wayne could do well was smack talk Communists... That's about it.
Perhaps it's me, but I think his westerns suck. He was self-righteous, usually morally wrong in whatever situation he was it, and had a tendency to just hit people instead of thinking. Now, in real life, I don't know... But his movie personality sucked ass. Now, The Shootist was a great movie. I'll give him that. Green Berets was a bit out and a little too much of the extremist field for me. |

I remember going to the theater to see the release of The Green Berets. I understand it was LBJ's favorite war movie...
I also used to sit glued to the TV watching it in my younger days. But last night when I watched it, I couldn't help but laugh the way the troops moved through the bush. Looked like mall ninja movements .I'm glad someone answered my original question about the toy rifle. I thought it was a .308 mag stuffed in the lower, some sort of super, secret squirrel weapon. |

That movie was awesome. Keep in mind it came out in 1968, the Army gave them all the toys to work with. Tiger Strip camo, M16s, Hueys,Claymores. It was awesome for '68. You have to compare it to other movies of its time to be fair.
