Cape_Hunter asks: VERY nice Colt! Care to give us some history on that gun?Any details?
Thanks for asking C-H. The Colt was manufactured in 1919. It is a commercial model and was engraved by Colt for a high-ranking military official after the war. The pistol is fully engraved as are the two magazines that came with it. The scroll work on the slide is inlaid silver that has a nice patina. Depending on the light, it can appear as either silver or gold inlay.
Somewhere along its life, some dumb-a$$ actually fired it as evidenced by the slight wear mark on the rear of the hammer. The pistol is in NRA 99 % condition (due to the wear mark).
The pistol was passed along by the original owner's family and came into the possession of a California collector where I eventually purchased it. It was a high dollar purchase but, how can you put a price of such great looking art??
As you might suspect, it is a safe queen. I regularly turn it to prevent the process of corrosion starting (i.e. the nasty "brown" rust. The gun was finished in high polish blue.) The pistol was originally sold with factory Colt genuine hand carved elephant ivory grips that depict a Chinese dragon.
As the ivory has aged over time, it has turned a "yellow" color as is typical of aged ivory.
I appreciate everyone's comments about the gun and hope you appreciate its intrinsic beauty as I do. And if I really took a notion to, I could shoot it but I thing I will pass. That's what the Springer is for !!!
Take care and safe shooting,
Lawdog
