momma always said beer is the devil.

Been drunk only once in my life, I think I was 13.

My brother and I had just got back from Europe with a bunch of beer cans for our collection (mostly full), this was back in the 70s when people collected beer cans.

Anyway we are in the bathroom pouring them down the sink (open from the bottom of course) and my brother is doing his best to look impressive by sampling them and giving me his worldly knowledge of beer facts (he was 17 and looked like dork at to me at the time).

Anyway one of the few things he actually did know was euro beer was much stronger than American beer. And since I hated the taste of beer he saw an opportunity to make some money.

He bet me $20 I couldn't drink an entire can without stopping. Beer tasted like piss to me but at 13 I'd have probably drank a can of piss for $20.00.

Well I did it and he was floored. And he owed me $20.00.

So he bet me $20.00 I couldn't do it again. Now he owes me $40.00.

By the time he figures out I will drink anything for $20 he owes me $80.00.

Then it hit me, I started to get kinda goofy.

Suddenly my brother (bright kid that he is realizes my parents will be home in about 20 minutes and his kid brother is fucking drunk). So he sticks me in a cold shower and I start playing in the water. He slaps me and I hawl off and slap him back. I know what is going on but don't care.

Then suddenly (and thankfully or I probably would have gotten alcohol poisoning) I got violently sick and threw up all over the bathroom and everything in it, including my brother. I'm still sorta drunk even though the 4 beers weren't in my system for much longer than 10 minutes.

My parents get home and my brother tries to convince them I have the flu or something all of the sudden. Only problem is the bathroom smells like a brewery and vomit. Like I said he wasn't the brightest kid on the block.

Anyway after a few hours of spins and headaches I was ok. Never liked the taste of beer (still don't) and after that incident never wanted another beer or to be drunk again. I imagine it is the same thing as making a kid smoke a pack of cigarettes till he pukes to cure him of wanting to smoke.

But the main thing I disliked about it was the loss of control (being drunk) that most people seem to enjoy. I don't even like a slight buzz.

When I lived in Iowa in the winter we would have something like a B&B (brandy and benedictine) before heading outside after a steak dinner (I wasn't driving) to warm us up first. And while I enjoyed the warming effect, I very much disliked the loss of control and alertness from the buzz.

And that probably is what kept me away from drugs all my life.
