Michigan State student tells police she made up sexual assault story
10/21/2004, 8:35 a.m. ET
The Associated Press

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A 19-year-old Michigan State University student who told police she was sexually assaulted by a stranger outside Holden Hall admitted she made up the story, authorities said.

The student had told police she was walking early Oct. 10 and was attacked. But the woman changed her story during an interview with police Wednesday, saying the man only grabbed her arm, the Lansing State Journal and The State News reported.

No one was arrested in the case. Authorities don't plan to charge the student with filing a false police report, Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. In a news release, police said personal factors may have led to her filing a false report.

The student's assault claim was the second reported sexual assault by a stranger on campus during the semester. In addition, nine sexual assaults involving people who knew each other have been reported.

In response to the reports, the university has been looking into how it can improve security and sexual abuse education, The Detroit News reported Sunday. The school already has stepped up its efforts to inform students whenever an attack is reported.

According to campus police, none of the reported attacks, which ranged from groping to rape, appears to be related.

Some people are sick and that causes them to file fake police reports.

Others just enjoy being a victim of something so people will feel sorry for them and coddle them.

I bet this chick is type #2.

"personal factors" - Ragtime?

Hey, if ragtime can get you out of a first-degree murder conviction, it can certainly get you out of filing a false police report.

The theory is, if you prosecute "false reports" some victims that are reluctant to report won't. That means that fewer sexual assualts will be reported, and rapists will commit more rapes before they are even reported, for their attacks.

There is some backasswards logic if I ever heard it.

Selective enforcement of the law diminishes the effectiveness of all laws.  If false reports aren't prosecuted, then the veracity of the real reports will be looked at with suspicion.  Not good for the real victims, is it?

+1

If the prosecution is based on evidence, as it ought to be, then those filing genuine reports have nothing to worry about since innocent people are never accused, charged, convicted or sentenced, right? Or maybe this is all just symptomatic of a deeper problem.

Because victims NEVER have concerns that they won't be believed.

Nor is sexual assualt often a he-said-she-said type of crime is it?

Nor has any police dept, armed service or other instituition actively sought to suppress sexual assualt reports to keep the reputation of the town, city, village or armed service from being sullied by sexual assualt allegations.

LOL - I had a friend who was falsely accused of sexual assault by a vindictive ex.  When he went in to be interviewed, he told the cop that he knew for a fact that they didn't have any evidence (duh, because he's innocent).  After skirting around the issue and my friend repeating that he knew they didn't have a damn thing on him, the cop finally got flustered and said, "we prosecute people all the time without evidence!"

Damn.

Luckily the psycho finally admitted that it wasn't true.  My friend got harrassed and the nothing hapened to the ex.

A sad state of affairs.

"...symptomatic of a deeper problem"

eta: Are you suggesting that the prosecution is the primary of even a primary reason why victims of sexual assault are afraid to report? It seems that a number of other concerns would likely loom much larger. Of course, I'm merely speculating.

It's the same logic that believes banning firearms will reduce crime.

If they're reluctant to report a crime it is a reasonable inference that they have some doubt in their minds that a crime occurred.  Accusing someone of a felony is very serious business and unless the accuser is totally certain in their own mind that they will follow the process through, then THEY SHOULDN"T make the formal accusation.

Filing a false report in a sexual assault case should be a felony and PROSECUTED.

It's also possible they are embarressed at getting raped, at having to recount the rape over an over again, as well as go through exams and evidence collection.

Generally "false reporters" give nebulous descriptions. Apparently that is to keep any suspects from being arrested.

I have no sympathy for anyone that intentionally accuses another person, and that leads to an arrest, trial etc. If that person is fabricating the incident.

But a person who lies to the police, and doesn't give enough info for a suspect to be ID'ed, and admits the deception. I think a prosecution is just malicious.
