do you feel a NAA 22lr is adequate for home protection? i would have felt much better if she had taken the rossi\taurus 38 andbeen able to stop a intruder....rather than piss him off. |

If you're going to be dumb, ya gots to be tough. When I worked gun shows, I usually got two questions ... One: "What's a good gun to get?" And two: "My friend said this model is a good gun, is it?" Fair enough. I said: "The one that fits your hand" and "Yep" There's no secret for selling retail ... Just shut-up and sell them what they want.  It's their decision. |

No, I don't feel a 22lr is adequate for home protection unless you are being attacked by squirrels. The 38 would have been a much better choice. |

... Among most of you fellas & chickadees here on ARFCOM I feel like an absolute gun-knowledge inbicile ... However, occasionally in my daily socializing, an acquaintance will introduce me to someone like your "old lady at the gun counter" and ask me for my "expert" opinion. ... Sorry fuckers, for the most part, they usually have to find out on their own, they won't listen to my reasoning as to why a S&W 500 Magnum isn't their best investment for a first-time gun purchase. ... Oh well, "more guns, less crime" I suppose |

The .22 is certainly better than a ball bat, a knife, or a sharp stick and 5 hits from one are certainly likely to put a damper on the bad guy's day, but that is certainly not the choice for a .22. Something one could actually hold and aim would have been far better.

I at least thought it would be one of those 8 shot 10.5oz 22lrs (317) or the 10.6oz 7 shot 22magnum(351pd). |

Here at work, I am the go-to guy for gunstuff. I can usually can answer it all, from pre-ww2 pocket pistol problems to winchester 1895 quirks. Just as important, I say what I don't know, and what I think MIGHT be true.
Critter blasters go to a couple other guys for advice. |

b/c i'm younger, just about every time i go to the range. 'old timers' always want to give me tips on shooting, converting my AR to full-auto, how .223 isn't accurate b/c it tumbles, etc... etc....

I love it when they assume I don't know anything. I had a gunstore owner sprint across his store the other day to tell me that the FAL mags I was buying were indeed for an FN FAL, and that I probably had something else. It amazes me that you can be seen with thousands of dollars worth of guns in that store one week, shave and come back the next to be treated like you never saw a real gun before. |

Usually its the idiotic anti's i encounter. They dont understand that "Bullet hose" and "Cop killer bullets" arnt real terms. Of course they also think that the AWB baned full-auto weapons. I remmember someone asking "Well arent you going to be happy being able to kill hundreds of people a second" I tryed to explain what the AWB did, but the flesh eating worms in her brain had disabled most of her reasonability.

As the designated gunsmith. I see this all the time. When some one has there mind set on something. Even if it is wrong. Its hard to get them to change.
For example I had a elderly lady that had came in and said she wanted a .45. This woman was maybe 5 foot tall. So I suggest something in a .38 cal. No she would not have anything smaller that a .45. So I take out a colt 1911 and go over the features. She had small hands and the gun did not fit too well. I had her try the slide. She could not pull it back. Then I got out a lady smith in .38. She had a much easer time using the smaller gun. I asked her why she wanted the 45. Her friends said she needed something in 45 because it a man stopper. Even though the gun did not fit or she could rack the slide. She still wanted it. |

C'mon guys. Get the AK47. The reason the VC won the war is because the AK47 fires BOTH AK47 and M16 bullets. This clever design allowed them to use captured US ammo as well as their own. Also the AK47 doesn't need to even be aimed to hit your target if you shoot from the hip. |
