Thanks guys. I'm looking for an old beater for hunting and hauling, kinda wanted a three speed for old times sake, I like them because you can shift without taking your hands off the wheel.

They are bad for getting sloppy and hanging in between gears. Very inconvenient when trying to go from point A to point B. I have had to adjusted them to take the slop out.

I had many cars w/3 on column -we used to call it "stab and steer"

Heh. Used to have a couple three-in-the-tree shifters at a farm I worked on. Really sloppy shifting. You kind of put in the general area and hoped for the best. Only four positions, so that was pretty easy--either all the way back or forward, and either up or down.
We used to go all Dukes of Hazzard and see how far we could jump the pickups. |

My brother had a late 70's early 80's Chevy Pickup Shortbed that I learned to drive on.
It was a 3 speed on the column....I'm going to try and find out now....

I had a 64 ford stepside short wheel base, 3 speed on the column.
That was one HEAVY truck! I liked it though, wish I still had it. |

Not nearlt the last, but I had a 1940 Buick Century with a straight 8 engine, suicide doors and 3 on the column. First production car in the United States that went 100 mph stock from the factory.
Bought it from my dad, then sold it back to him. He cherried it out. (still stock) It is a great car and he has driven family members on wedding days, prom nights etc........ |

My Dad had a '74 Dodge van with a three speed on the column. It was a 12 passenger he turned into a work van. Tu-tone yellow and white, man I wouldn't mind having that now, but I always though it was a POS back then...

What? Desiring a 3 speed on the column is like longing for the days of black and white console TVs. "I just loved the click of the rotary dial!"
 Get an automatic on the column, or a floor shift manual. I hate how Japanese manufacturers put automatic transmission shifters on the floor. Recently, I rode in a friends Pilot with an automatic and it had a column shifter so they may be coming around. Some say it's because they want to shift it manually while driving. My thought is that if you desire to do this, WTF are you doing with an automatic in the first place. |

could someone explain to me how you shift this without taking your hand off the wheel? i own one (1966 ford bronco) and always have to use one hand to move the shifter. is there some trick im missing?

My dad had a '68 Ford F-100 with 3 on the tree. I learned to drive it when I turned 16, but then he sold it a couple of years later. Damn, I miss that truck.

Latest I can recall is a '79 Furd pickup I owned.
BTW, it is more properly refered to as Bolt Action Shifter

no, i'm not joking!! the shifter has a substantial arc to hit all the gears. not to mention that forward/backward motion. i really don't know how else i'd do it... |

yehaw!!! MY very first car (er truck)
1969 Ford F-100 Standard 2 wheel drive. 3 on the tree! THAT IS THE ONE YOU WANT! As for people saying you are going retro - you could alsway get a dodge dart with Push button transmission....now that WAS lame! In the Ford - I could shift gears whith three buddies and a few cheerleaders sitting comfortably next to me on the blue velour (sp) bench seat!!! you could snap off the door panels to store your booze in the door. High School teachers always wondered why we drank so much gatorade on the lunch hour!! lololo good times! |
