Don't buy a Gateway! The only computer that even comes close to this level of
crap is E Machine. The price sounds great, but I still wouln't touch it. |

I got a gateway this go-round because the last several Dells I had were pure hot steaming shit. I still have a new company owned dell (2 computers). I suspect that since Gateway closed all of its stores, Best Buy is it's new marketing channel. E-machine was purchased by gateway. To retain the emachine staff and close one operation, they chose to close the Poway Gateway factory and consolidate in Orange County. Stir in some disgruntled employees, and quality may suffer. I would try to research some real and recent users, rather than interweb speculators. Best Buy probably offers a very good warranty. $800 is a throw away box, so if it survives its infancy, it will probably live to kindergarten. |

A better idea would be to build your own...
Short of that, get an eMachines, they are assembled in the same place (Korea), using the same components and they are supported by the same Indian outsourcer. You just pay about $3-400 for that gateway name on the box. |

Bear in mind here, I'm not looking to take over the world with this thing. I also don't need the latest and greatest super-cool machine for playing the latest super-secret version of Doom 12. I need to get online, download music, manipulate digital pics a bit, and check email. Other than that all I really need to do is write the occasional letter on Word and generate the occasional spreadsheet on Excel. I do tend to operate with several windows open at a time when I'm online, but that's about the extent of stressing out the machine that I go to. No CAD, no 3d modeling, no video editing, none of that crap.
I do know however that Emachines are junk. My mom had one and even I managed to crash it repeatedly. |

malarky! my last emachine (cost $300) lasted 4 years and was dead-nut reliable untill the drive failed. i replaced it with the emachines i'm typing/posting this on. they may be throwaways, but who cares? if they last 3 years they have been obsolete for 2-1/2. i don't play games, so i have no need for 16 gig of ddr sdram on a 8oo hz bus or a vid card that needs liquid cooling. a emachines works fine for me. our office has 4 gateways running. only one has had problems and the onsite service fixed it quickly. i used to build my own boxes...no need to now. |

For the love of God...just don't do it!
My friend owns a computer repair shop. He gets a lot of business because of Gateway. I also used to install RoadRunner with him. 9 out of 10 times when a computer was just completely f*cked... it was a Gateway! E-Machines are at least as bad if not worse...probably worse. I know you don't want anything fancy, but you do want a stable machine, don't you? For $800 bucks, you can build something MUCH nicer than you can buy. No one deserves a Gateway  edited to add: My friend bought an E-Machine after I PLEADED with him not to. He bought the extended warranty. He returned that computer AT LEAST 4 times I know of. |

as long as you realise they are disposable after about 24months fine. But i constatly hear people bitching about 3+ year old machines that have had MULTIPLE problems.

Emachine at work caught on fire. CD-audio cable along with part of the motherboard burst into flames. Not a good day to be an emachine user.

OK, let's take a minute to analyze this "you can get a better machine for the same money if you build it yourself":
All prices from newegg Case W/ 420 watt power supply $56 Intel motherboard $90 512 megs ram $120 200 Gig HS $120 Sony Dual layer DVD burner $80 (man I got fucked) 3.0 ghz P4 chip $200 $666 with no warranty, no software, and god knows if all this crap is compatible or not. Plus I am still short one DVD drive, and internal card reader, etc. |

I got a Gateway for my B-day at the end of last month.
$500, for a 2.8Gig processor, 17" monitor, speakers,no floppy drive. The ONLY thing that I hate is the Win XP home edition thats installed in it. I'd rather have Win 98. It took me 2 weeks to get everything working properly and I still don't have my e-mail working 100%(99%) HECK, it took me several days just to find simple things, they renamed everything and hid it in placed where it doesn't belong, then a few more days changin or turning off all of the stupid defaults so I can use it without things popping up every several minuets. I HATE XP My last computer's HD crashed after a nice 6 year usage with no problems but 3 processor cooling fans, processor upgrade (400Mhz to 500Mhz) and a reformat (with processor upgrade (processor burned up after last cooling fan died). This was a Tiger Direct computer. BISHOP |
