P.S.  Yes, black people are just as racist if not more so than white people.  Guess what?  ALL races have racist people.  Japanese people are generally very racist.  Its everywhere, and people should not be so shocked or scared by it.

Hardworking, self respecting people of any race are fine in my book, even if they don't like me.  A proud and intelligent black man standing up for what he believes in deserves respect for that alone.  Most of them are stupid thugs who don't have a clue about anything other than they hate "the man".  Just like most white people who hate blacks are stupid rednecks.

We don't identify with them, they don't identify with us, and both groups feel threatened.  Pure and simple, natural behavior.

My fiance is from Dearborn Heights, just outside of Detroit. Dearborn Heights is little Ciaro and Detroit is a real shithole. Her mother who has lived there for 20 years calls it Detoilet.

Detroit has to season, fucking freezing and construction. It's slam full of sheeple that can't wipe there own ass.

My fiance who has lived in Dearborn Heights her entire life see's a dead rabbit in the street in our town, she asks if we should call animal control. I ask her why do you think they are going to resurect it from the dead, do you think they are the Animal Jesus or something.

She didn't find that funny, but apparently in Detoiled and Dearborn Habib Heights the city picks up dead critters from the road.

Oh and the people are anti social assholes in Detroit, and for the entire North for the matter. They don't have casual conversations and are pricks.

I met my fiance in Holland, MI where she was working as a waitress and going to Grand Valley State University. Western and Northern Michigan are more like the Mid West. I could live there. But Detroit is a cesspool of socialism and other rancid shit.

Michigan would be a great state if they sent all there damn liberals to Detoilet and let Canada take it over.

Greek and Mexican town aren't tax payer funded centers, African town wants to be. $30million in loans directly from local taxes, not FEDERAL taxes, BIG difference.

I know what Greek Town and Mexican Village are, I've been to both many times, of course calling them a town and a village is very misleading as they're each only about a block in size.

Since there was nothing in this thread that stated where the loans would be coming from, I looked a little further for information.  It seems that the $30 million is to come from the casinos.

This is a Detroit City Council proposal

Remedy or racist? Detroit council plan aims to increase black businesses

September 27, 2004

BY MARISOL BELLO
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

No proposal is complete, no financing finalized and no land identified, but there is plenty of emotion over a Detroit City Council plan to create a black business district known as African Town.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's administration is distancing itself from the plan; council members want to separate the rhetoric behind the plan from what they say is a need for the city to help black entrepreneurs, and Detroiters share mixed -- albeit heated -- feelings. Even the federal government is weighing in.

The outcry stems from a controversial report commissioned by council members to look at ways to improve the economic state of poor blacks through increased business ownership. But the report also rails against immigrants for taking opportunities away from blacks, says integration has failed and warns officials about nonblacks moving into the city.

The report runs counter to efforts embraced by city and state leaders to improve relations, such as fostering regional cooperation and Gov. Jennifer Granholm's Cool Cities initiative designed to attract diverse residents to urban centers.

"City Council's proposal ... presents many provocative issues, many of which reflect the same provincial politics that have plagued our region for decades," said mayoral spokesman Howard Hughey. "We are opposed to anything that hinders the great progress we've made in regional cooperation."

The mayor's development team pulled out of talks with the council last week because of worries that the plan will illegally benefit only one race.

Granholm's office would not comment on the report, but her spokeswoman, Elizabeth Boyd, said: "Gov. Granholm is very committed to reinventing our core cities, and the Cool Cities initiative is really an economic development initiative to make our cities exciting places where people will want to live and work."

Detroit was one of 20 cities that received up to $100,000 in spring as part of the governor's push.

And in a letter sent to Council President Maryann Mahaffey, the Detroit field office director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development warned that federal money cannot be used in any project that is race specific.

Historically, the city uses HUD money to help in economic development projects, but in this case, "such action would be viewed as creating opportunities for minority entrepreneurs, but discriminating on the basis of race and ethnic background," Toni Schmieglow said in the letter.

Council members say they don't want to exclude anyone, but they sought the report, called "A PowerNomics Economic Development Plan for Detroit's Under-Served Majority Population," as a way to help a group that has been economically ignored for too long.

"I have a problem with the whole approach to this issue," said Mahaffey, one of the seven who voted for the plan. "I think it's wrong pitting one group against another. What we're saying is one group has been left out and we want to make sure they get a piece of it."

Council President Pro Tem Kenneth Cockrel Jr. said he doesn't support the rhetoric in the plan but voted for it because he wants to find ways to increase black wealth and entrepreneurship.

Other than the report, council members have not laid out a specific plan for a proposed African Town, nor have they passed any legislation creating it.

They passed two resolutions related to the PowerNomics report, one of which creates a corporation that would loan money exclusively to black entrepreneurs. It would be funded with the $30 million the three casinos would give the city if they build permanent sites.

Councilwomen Sheila Cockrel and Kay Everett voted against the resolutions. And the mayor vetoed the resolutions on grounds that the city cannot legally set money aside for members of one race. But the majority of the council overrode the vetoes.

Council members say the next step lies with the administration, which must work with the report's author, Claud Anderson, to develop a plan for an African Town. They say the city should financially contribute to the plan because previous administrations have used tax abatements, free land and other incentives to help build Greektown, Mexicantown, the Renaissance Center and the area around Comerica Park and Ford Field.

Mahaffey said the idea for an African Town is not new. She said it dates back to before Mayor Coleman Young's administration when the city had talked about creating an international town made up of business districts representing various ethnic groups.

Council members thought African Town had a chance after Kilpatrick and his development officials met last week with Anderson.

But Kilpatrick's main development officials pulled out of a meeting scheduled for last Tuesday, saying they would not participate in discussions about a race-based development plan. The city's chief development officer, Walter Watkins, did not return calls seeking comment.

The report is based on Anderson's PowerNomics concept, which teaches "Black Americans to pool their resources so that they can produce, distribute and consume in ways that create goods, jobs and wealth within their own communities."

The report says integration, regionalism and immigrants from Mexico, the Middle East and Asia have hurt black people's attempts to gain wealth. It also calls on city leaders to correct disparities between blacks and other racial and ethnic groups.

For example, the report says: "Recently, newer concepts such as suburbanization, outsourcing and 'Cool Cities' have been introduced. Buyer beware. New nonblack groups entering Detroit's inner city have their own particular set of interests and they do not coincide with what is in the best interest of Detroit or its MUP (majority underserved population)."

Anderson, a 69-year-old former Detroiter, holds various degrees, including a doctorate in education from Wayne State University. He has written several books, including "PowerNomics: The National Plan to Empower Black America" and "Black Labor, White Wealth: A Search for Power and Economic Justice." He runs a nonprofit think tank on black issues called the Harvest Institute and a consulting business, PowerNomics Corporation of America Inc., which both are based in Bethesda, Md.

Detroiters are having mixed reactions to Anderson's report and the council's efforts.

On the sidelines of the growth sprouting in the New Center area, on a block along Woodward near Grand Boulevard that's been proposed as a possible site for African Town, Sandra Nelson and her stylists are thrilled about the idea.

They say it's about time someone tries to help black entrepreneurs.

"We need it the most," said Pam Morrel, a hairstylist at Nelson's Praise Him Beauty Barber and Nail Salon. "Blacks are the only people who do not have businesses in their own community."

Nelson struggles to get clients through the door of her hair salon. She opened the salon last year without any bank loans or business plan. But she stares at the empty chairs and hopes business will pick up soon.

"I need the help," Nelson said. "I would love to get one of those grants."

Across the street, at Roby's Shoes, Jeffery Roby and his family have run their shop in the same spot for 30 years. He thinks African Town as an advertising strategy is a great idea, but he worries that longtime business owners like himself who are not black may get pushed out.

"I'm all for it," Roby said. "But they can't kick out people who've been supporting this city for years."

North of 8 Mile, where the city ends, the proposed plan has raised some hackles.

"I think it's one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard about and frankly insulting," said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. "How would residents of Detroit feel if I would propose having a Honky Town in Oakland? I would be run out of office, and rightfully so."

And the protests begin!

Ethnics protest Detroit's plan for African Town

Members of other minorities say district shouldn't exclude them

September 29, 2004

BY MARISOL BELLO
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Members of Detroit's Latino, Asian and Arab communities demanded a public apology from the City Council on Tuesday, denouncing the body for embracing an economic development plan that would exclusively benefit black business owners.

During a protest rally, leaders of the various ethnic communities said they want the council to rescind the resolutions it passed supporting the plan, and they want to meet with the council to correct what they say is offensive rhetoric in a report that forms the basis of the council's plan to create a black business district to be known as African Town. The plan also would create a loan fund only for blacks.

The report, titled "A PowerNomics Economic Development Plan for Detroit's Under-Served Majority Population," says immigration has hurt blacks because Mexicans, Asians and Arabs take jobs, resources and other opportunities from blacks.

"The language in the report is divisive," said Angela Reyes, one of the protest organizers and head of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation.

She said the Latino community supports any effort by the council to help improve the economic condition of poor blacks, but added, "To blame immigrants, particularly Hispanics, is ludicrous. We're suffering under the same conditions."

At least 30 people gathered in front of City Hall Tuesday evening, marching with signs.

"We are opposed to any government action that distributes public money based on race," said Marisa Ming, executive director of the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce in Auburn Hills.

The protesters said they do not oppose the city creating a business district called African Town as long as others are not excluded.

They took issue with some of the language in the report, for which the council paid $112,000, and which the protesters said is riddled with fallacies and stereotypes.

The report refers to Dearborn as Arabtown, and says Hispanics, Asians and Arabs are classified as whites so they enjoy benefits denied blacks.

Detroit's Latino activists said they were galled by one reference that read: "Even though legal and illegal Hispanics constitute only 3 percent of Detroit's population and 90 percent have been in the country less than 25 years, Hispanics aggressively demand inclusion in local affirmative action programs and in elected positions ... Rather than either distinguishing the situation of blacks and Hispanics, or pointing out that blacks are the majority population and therefore can elect who they wish, local political forces have instead acceded to these demands."

Detroiters of Hispanic descent say even though Latinos, mainly Mexicans, have been settling in Detroit since the 1800s, they remain an invisible community and have no elected representation in a city where 82 percent of the population is black.

They say they've seen their share of discrimination, going back to the 1930s, when about 90 percent of the city's approximately 45,000 Latinos -- mostly Mexicans -- returned to Mexico as part of a U.S. government-sponsored repatriation program.

Today, census data shows Latinos make up 5 percent of the city's population. That is a 67-percent increase since 1990.

Council President Pro tem Kenneth Cockrel Jr. and other council members have acknowledged problems with the rhetoric in the report, but say its basic premise -- to increase the fortunes of poor blacks -- has merit.

Cockrel said he would welcome a discussion with leaders of the various ethnic communities.

"The Detroit City Council does not embrace racism as an economic development strategy," he said.

Councilwoman Kay Everett, who also opposed the plan, will hold a press conference today with community activists to protest the council's actions.

Councilwoman Sheila Cockrel, who also opposed the plan, said the concept of African Town is not the issue.

"It's the fact that racial and ethnic categories would be used, and that's illegal," she said.
