When I was at school in TX the northwestern contingent of students and myself switched from shorts to long pants at 35 degrees. It was funny watching the natives donning fleece lined parkas at about 50 degrees. My wife grew up with wood as the ONLY heat in her parent's house. The wood stove was ducted into the central heating ducts and someone in her family had to stoke the stove every morning. I love winter. My favorite thing in the whole world is making the first tracks on newfallen snow on the runway at about 6AM. The airport is dead in the winter and that is the best flying. Flying into a 200' ceiling however is NOT fun. Planerench out. |

I am right there with you on the wood heat. Nothing better than getting up early in the morning, grabbing a shower, and standing naked by the wood stove.

Only showing 49F on Weather Bug here...did crank up the stove though...1st fire of the season...got to split some locust tommorow.

On the assumption all of the guys in Alaska are not here tonight, I got you all beat when it comes to whining about cold.
By the way I have to brag and say I've seen -58 C. (or -73 F.) It's not nice! |

Yep 38 here ,bad news for me. I have to go train a couple guys on how to clean restaraunt kitchens. I always get wet no matter what I do. Brrrrrrrrrrrr

39 is normal high for this time of year up here, funny how everything down south comes to a stand still when there's a inch of snow on the ground

My furnace hasn't even kicked on yet this year ... after last years low of -20F I spent the Spring and Summer improving the insulation in the house. I'm at the point now where the house is tight enough you can almost heat the house with a candle ... I just had a wood burning stove put in, that's a good tip about the saw mill, I'll have to check into a source like that. I've been paying a neighborhood tree guy for truck loads of logs (still have to cut and split them to size myself) get around 3 cords for $100 (still steep, but better than the $250/cord that they're asking around here).

Heck, we have been burning the wood stove for over two weeks now.
Days are still in the 50s but the nights have been in the 20s and it is going to go into early winter next week. Thats the way it is living at 6500 feet in the mountains! We love it! Have around five cords also. Almost ran out last winter as winter lasted until late May. |

Here in the San Gabriel Valley of So. Calif. 10 miles east of Los Angeles, our low was in the lower 50s and our high was in the upper 60s, and its cloudy and rainy until Wed. night.

There is a sawmill down the road from me that sells railroad tie butts for $10 for all you can haul in a pickup. It ends up being about 1 1/2 rick after splitting. Mixed oak, blackgum, ash, hickory, hackberry, etc. No bark at all and very clean. I can heat my house all winter for less than $150.
