What do you do with the ends of a loaf of bread?  Growing up, none of my siblings would eat that first end slice or had the nerve to throw it out (my parents grew up on farms in Hungary and it would have been anathema to throw perfectly good food in the garbage).  So that first slice would act as a 'cover' following the entire loaf of bread in the bag until you got to the other end.  Now if you weren't inclined to eat that first slice at the beginning of the loaf, you certainly weren't going to eat it after a dozen or so hands had pawed all over it.  The two end slices were then usually sneaked into the bottom of the garbage bag, never to be seen again.

The ends pose undue hardship in making sandwiches because of the 'convex' shape of the slice, its smaller surface area and the extra thick 'crust'.  You could maybe make an abortion of a sandwich out of it but you can absolutely forget about making a grilled cheese sandwich.

So what do you do with them?  (Poll Coming.)

Edited for spelling.

I love bread, however bread has lots of carbs and carbs are evil!  I'm torn!

I am out of everything.

I despise all but homemade bread

Last job was repairing equipment in the food processing industry.  Mass produced bread is nasty.

Bread ends just need more butter.

In my family, we always called the end of the load "the heel."  It might be a Kansan thing.

Editted to correct spelling.

We always called 'em "heels," and they're my favorite part of a loaf of bread. I wish you could buy a bag of heels. I wish you could buy a carton of egg yolks, heat them up, and pour them over a big plate of bread heels.

Any food I don't eat goes into the compost pile to be converted into soil by my minions, then into the garden next spring to be converted into tomatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, corn, etc.

I love the damn things.  I just wish they would invent a load of bread that's all ends.

I prefer them, as does my son.  We fight over them and I usually lose.

The ends are eaten, they are never wasted. A standard loaf of bread is running about $2.50 a loaf at the local supers. I would be whatever is on sale and use whatever coupons I have to get it down. That is really expensive. BUT, I've discovered a french-type Vietnamese bread that cost only $0.79/lb loaf at the local Asian super, and it tastes really good.

Dude!  The heels are the best part!  Especially on "Inkeepers Raisin Bread" (or whatever the name is), which sells for like $3 per loaf at CostCo in WA.  Fantastic stuff, instant diabetic coma.

I eat the entire loaf, including the heels.

While there is the occasional "skimpy heel", I haven't had any real trouble using the heel for making a sammich.

I save them for last and then eat them.  For some reason I think that the heel isn't as porous as the rest and leaving that first slice there protects the rest of the bread from drying out so fast.

I am single, and never can seem to make it thru an entire loaf before it goes bad.  I usally end up tossing the last 1/3 of the loaf in the trash.
