A good friend of mine just called me.  He said last night that someone started yelling in his front yard at about 3 AM, then kicked his front door in, actually broke it, then ran off.
He's a good ol' boy who can handle himself well and isn't afraid to fight.  But the problem is he wants to borrow a gun.

He wants to borrow a gun.  I don't know what to do.  I have a couple of unregistered guns that I have thought about loaning him.  If I let him borrow one, it'll probably be a Remington 870 that I bought at an estate sale.  It's got  a TacStar pistol-grip and fore-grip.  Pretty menacing looking.

The other problem is that he has two boys, ages approx. 9 and 11.  Perfect age to find the gun and do who knows what.  I keep all my guns locked in a separate gun room in my house.  I'm sure he doesn't have any way to secure the gun.

What the hell should I do?

I was just in this same situation last week.  I told my friend no.  Why?

Because he has little training and I will not have a gun of mine involved oin a possible crime situation.

However, I did go to the guys house and give him pointers and setting up a defensive house.

Its not agaist the law to protect yourself. If your friend can handle a gun and his kids know better to mess with it, I'd say to lend him one of your "Legal" long guns.

any good old boy will have two or three of his own guns.  you won't need to give him one.

if you do decide to give him the 870 do yourself a favor and spray the shit out of it with break cleaner (removes fingerprints)  and then oil it down with LPS-3 (heavy oil) and put it in a nice plastic gun case for him with a trigger lock.  35.00

I never, EVER, loan guns.

...or tools

... or books

...but ESPECIALLY guns!

Help him buy his own, but keep yours at home.

I'd be a bud and loan him one. Sounds like he needs it.

Screw lawyers.

Options in order of least risk to you:
1 Lend him money to purchase his own shotgun.
2 Have him get his own revolver and keep in 2 places, locked up tight or on his person.
3 Lend him your shotgun, make sure he shows it to his kids and explains it, that way curiosity does not kill them.
No matter what. If he gets a firearm you need to:
Reinforce the importance of teaching his children Gun safety, usually getting a good mean load and a couple of water melons to let them shoot at, then give them the picture that the melon could be their head. Worked for me when I was about 6 or 7.

unregistered guns? You live in FL, there is no registering of firearms.... what the hell are you talking about?

Tell your friend to file a police report and to go buy a shot gun. If this is  even a real story.

Id take him and my least favorite firearm to a local gun shop and have them do a transfer from you to him on a 4473. That way its legit and your ass is covered..

I'll make it simple for you!

Him +Gun=Liability for you legally!

He shoots, gets charges for unregistered gun even if shooting was justified, he says but so and so loaned it to me, you get charges for transferring weapon to said friend and you to get to get cozy in same cell!

Besides the very least that would happen, is he would lose your gun for you for indefinate period or for good! And you would get sued by the family of anyone who gets shot because you provided the weapon if it was not for you their "Poor sweet innocent baby would still be alive but instead is dead!"

They win lawsuit on you and asks "What's in your wallet?" with a scottish accent!

Get the point!!!????!!!

I've got about one person I know that I would lend a gun to besides my wife and dad.....and he could walk into my house and take it from the safe if he wanted.  Like I said about one person....

Any of my friends are welcome to borrow any of my guns if they want or need to.

What good is it to own stuff if I don't let others use it?

In the scenario you posted I would say no.

I would give him the money to go buy one if he needs one.

Take him out to get a gun.  Help him, teach him.

Make sure he gets a way to secure his gun.  They sell cheapo gun safes and gun cabinets at Wal-mart for cheap.  Help him get one.

But don't LOAN out a gun.  Bad Juju.

Take him to Academy and have him buy a shotgun.

Or SELL him one of your guns...   Then ask him why the fuck he doesn't already have one.

$215.18 at WalMart.  Probably cheaper in some stores.  Either loan him the money or tell him to "Man the fuck up".  It's his family's safety at stake.  Go find the bucks.

Don't loan someone a gun. How are you to know if they're allowed to possess one. Maybe he's a convicted felon and you don't know it.

Agreed (and get trained).  There are only 2 men not in my family that I'd trust with my rifles - and both of them already own firearms.

Have him call 911 guns are dangerous. If he can't get 911 have him call DU. If he can't get DU tell him to get his shit together and learn how to protect his family.

An option not mentioned already - sell him a gun as a fair price, as low as is appropriate. He could always sell it back if he doesn't wantit later, but legally sell it to him, don't lend it to him.
