I would prefer to get him one that can also be used in the home and would REALLY like to get him one that has an optional boombox adapter setup but could do without it if another unit had sufficient advantages to make it worth it instead.

For a minute I thought you were talking about getting a good HAM, Export Radio or 10 Meter.

But for a radio rec. I would suggest anything decent by Kenwood, Sony or Pioneer

Nawww, he'd never use one of those but a nice sirius/XM setup with a car, home, and boombox setup and he'd use it all day....
