Has he differentiated between the two?  There's obviously nothing wrong with using adult stem cells for research, and if they can be as benificial as people say it would probably be worth funding.

I'm asking this because in another forum a member said that if he finds out that Bush is only against government funding of embryonic stem cell research, he may vote for him.

it only restricts government funds from embryonic research, aside from the ones that were already out there when he enacted the restrictions.
it has no restrictions on privately funded embryonic stem cell research and has absolutely no restriction on giving government funding to adult stem cell research.

makes sense since there has been no breaktrhoughs in embryonic research at all but there have been many in the adult stem cell research.

Furthermore, I've heard the embryonic cells have resulted in various cancers in lab rats.

The only thing he hasn't permitted is the harvesting of new embryonic stem cells from embryos, ie, fertilized eggs.

My textbook says that you can also obtain embryonic stem cells from a rare type of testicular and ovarian tumor (teratoma) , but I have NEVER heard that mentioned in any debate, even amongst scientific types...

Embronic he is against. The same cells can be gotten from umbilicable cords of newborns but the researchers do not want to harvest those because they would have to go thru the trouble of being there when a baby is born. They want to do it on their own time and kill an embyro.

He is the only pres to have EVER FUNDED ANY STEM CELL RESEARCH

More has been done with adult stem cells than he is given credit for...why doesn't Senator Frist defend W?

Let's be honest, stem cell research isn't an issue too many people will decide the Presidential election on.

Bush is only against government funding, most of the inventions and discoverys in history didn't have federal funding but we got them becauce we needed them or because someone sold the idea to us.

Here is his policy on stem cells:

1.  Private firms (or state governments) can fund all the embryonic research they like.

2.  The Fed fund research on stem cells where the embryos were killed prior to the Bush Admin.  This is a fairly small number of embryos but sufficient for a lot of research.

3.  They fund adult stem cell research like crazy--about 6 times more funding for adult stem cell research over embryonic stem cells.

They are having the best luck now with adult stem cell research.  The cloning involved in embryonic stem cells may be the problem.  The actual practise of cloning is really not working the way theory says it should.

Not just adult stem cells -- the only real results have been from stem cells taken from the same person that they will be implanted back into.  Cells from other people (e.g., anything from embryonic stem cell research) have all the same problems as any other transplanted organ.

As everyone else has said, the "ban" only applies to federal funding of new cell lines of embryonic stem cells.  Lines that were already in use will continue to be allowed to be funded with federal money;  private industry can create and fund its own new lines.  But a new line cannot be funded with federal dollars -- that's the only restriction Bush has put in place.

Um not true, even fat has stem cells. Plenty of things due.

I heard a couple doctors discussing this and they said the only positive results have come from tests using adult and umbilical cord stem cells.  They said that embryonic stem cells have caused tumors every time they've been tested.

Does anyone have a reputable website to link to with the info?

nationalreview.com has had lots of articles on the subject over the years.  Also the President has something like a "Bio-Medical Ethics" commission which oversees this stuff.

Bush is against the gov't paying to kill babies. period.

ONLY against new lines of embryonic stem cells PAID FOR by gov't.

Embryonic is OK. New lines OK. Private enterprise can do anythign tehy want.

he si FOR stem cell research, particualrly the adult stem cells that are producing here and now results.

Lemme explain what the debate is about -

Gov't funding of new lines of embryonic stem cells is all about creating a for- profit meat market that legitimizes abortion. Abortion them becomes a good  and necessary thing that supplies the grist for stem cell research.

Who was that nazi doctor that conducted horrific experiments on Jewish children??

Mengele, and you are exactly right about the motivation for the embryonic stem cell research.  They tried the same thing about 15 years ago when it looked like tissue from an aborted fetus could be used to cure some diseases.
