The exact amount is 43,560 sq. ft.--just looked it up in a Webster's dictionary.

43,560 sq. ft. You can look it up in the back of most dictionaries. Divide number of square rods by 160 or square chains by 10. 272.25 sq. ft. = 1 sq. rod. 16 sq. rods = 1 sq. chain 160 sq. rods or 10 sq. chains = 1 acre. 640 acres = sq. mile (a section) 36 sq. miles / 36 sections = one township |

When you can't remember the exact number of square feet in one acre, there is an easy way to calculate the value -
Remember that a section is one (statute) mile on each side, and that it is 640 acres. A mile is 5280 feet. One acre is: 5280 X 5280 square feet / 640 acres = 43560 square feet per acre ! |
