Milan's about 15 miles north of Jackson.

The plant sits on 24000 acres southeast of Milan, immediately east of Hwy. 45, 15 minutes north of I-40.

probably an accident...just heard it mentioned on the radio.

Explosives plants explode from time to time.

We used to have one about 15 miles from here. It blew up so often they bought all the homes within a mile of the plant. Also have an old WWII era arsenal here. It also sits on about 24,000 acres. Everything is spread out because things do go wrong once in a while.

Explosion rocks Milan Army Ammunition Plant

The Jackson Sun

An explosion shook the Milan Army Ammunition Plant on Wednesday afternoon. Preliminary reports indicate that at least one person was seriously injured, possibly killed, and two people were unaccounted for, authorities said.

''There's been a reported fatality and two people missing,'' said spokesman Kirk Pickering of the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, although Pickering stressed that those reports were ''very'' preliminary and that TEMA was awaiting confirmation of those reports.

Milan Mayor George Killebrew said the explosion happened around 2 p.m. in the ammunition storage area.

''The storage area is kind of isolated from the rest of the arsenal,'' said Killebrew, noting that the plant sits on 22,000 plus acres. ''They don't know how many persons are hurt or injured.

''It wasn't a large number of people there at the time.''

Killebrew also had heard initial reports that two people were missing, and one person was severely injured.

''We sent fire out there to take some radios and equipment,'' he said of the city's response. ''Our police responded as soon we heard about it. We work real closely with folks out there.''

The plant, also known as the Milan Arsenal, was established in 1941. It makes medium caliber ammunition for the Army and employs about 600 workers. It is located on 22,436 acres that sits in Gibson and Carroll counties.

According to The Associated Press, the plant got an $11 million contract in 2003 to load, assemble and pack M918 cartridges, a 40 mm training cartridge used in grenade machine guns.

Most plants that make explosives are surrounded by a forest of trees. The trees are there to "absorb" the shockwave. I remember the Alliant Powder(formerly Hercules) powder plant blowing up, it flatten a bunch of trees for something like 1/2 mile radius, the plant was demolished but that was it for the damage, and no one was hurt.

My father commented on this when I talked to him a few minutes ago. He said he didn't hear or feel anything. His step-father was watering his garden and felt it. - He lives 20 miles or so north of Jackson off of I-65.

my father worked in the ravenna, ohio arsenal after his navy service in ww2.

the buildings are designed with blast baffles and pressure relief ports in them. 'theoretically, the buildings are supposed to direct and vent blast gases/forces to minimize damage and casualies.

as waldo said, the ammo plants and storage depots near us had a reputation for lighting off every so often.

anyone remember that dynomite/tnt plant in nitro, w.v. (yup...the town's real name) going up?

Actually, on average, kids see more school than you did when you were a kid.

We may have "breaks," but they are very short. A day or two, usually.
