As a former medic the MEDICAL response is NO ABSOLUTLEY NOT FOR INTRAVENOUS USE. The preservatives CAN go bad in the fluid and it would be possible for bacteria to grow. not likely but possible. A bacterial blood infection is NASTY! Almost ALL expiration dates are set VERY conservativly for legal reasons.
From an emergency field perspective if it's better than bleeding out you better beleive i would use it. mike |

Roger that - I'm aware of the reasons and I've inspected the fluids for any signs of deterioration. They look pretty dandy to me.
However, if you don't see me posting tomorrow evening...

Drink a glass of water for every drink you had and pop some Aleve. You should be fine... why the hell IV yourself? Thousands of college students handle the morning-after issue daily

I've just been spoiled with using the quickest way to rehydrate myself. I can bang in 1 or 2 liters of fluid right quick - but sippin' water takes to dang long.
Heck, I might even invest in one of those pressure infusers. |

I've volunteered to be a pin cushion many times. People DO need the practice. I just make them use 22g needles.

i was already NR paramedic certified when i enlisted. I spent AIT at ft sam living off post killing time. My squad used to come over to my apartment on weekends to study/drink. First guy to pass out became the "Casualty". Some of those poor badstards looked like heroine addicts by the time those guys were done with them. Our Cadre Sgt used to laugh his ass off about it. mike |

i just wish i could have made a living at it. Payroll for paramedics here SUCKED ASS in the 80's.
I used to joke with the drill instructers that i joined the army because i figured i'd get shot at less than on a rescue rig

Don't know about IV fluids. I wouldn't try it, but oral meds are another thing. I am a registered Nurse and have a few friends that are Pharm D's. The other day we were talking about expiration dates on meds and my friend showed me a study done on some WWII antibiotics that had been in storage since the war. Tests showed no breakdown and efficacy rates greater than 99% of origional strength. His view is that with proper storage in a climate controlled environment meds have the shelf life of some of our sealed milsurp ammo. This of course would not play well with the regulatory agencies and drug companies. Just think of the millions of doses stored say, from WWII being used today. No reason to buy more drugs until the existing suplly is exhausted.

Private companies pay dirt around here. You have to get on with a city like Austin or a hospital like Cook Children's. I was making $22 per hour in the Ped. ER. |

city when i was there paid 18k per year. This was 1987. Ambulance companies were in the 6.50-7.00hr range. IBM pays MUCH BETTER |

Yep... I've seen studies where 15 years after the expiration that many drugs were still QUITE "safe" and viable... there are a COUPLE of exceptions though... unfortunately they don't readilly come to mind (I just know the couple of drugs _I_ may wish to utilize in the future will be FINE if they are years after their "expiration" ;) TYPICALLY though, it is my understanding that 1 year afterthe expiration "posted" is the "norm" to keep form being sued if it's a "close call" don't know for certain if that applies to IV stuff though :/ |
