Quoted: In the biggest Italian newspaper, a serious one and not a gossip tabloid, is reported that in the immediate aftermath of 9-11 a French general was sent to Washington (the newspaper said also the name but I can't recall it...) on 9-16 2001 with a secret mission.
He offered military assistance to US in case they will invade Iraq: 15.000 men plus ships. Bush administration showed good will in accepting. Months later, Rumsfeld declaration about "Old Europe" (France and Germany) freezed the possibility to get this support.
According to you, what happened?
This is something that can put relationships between USA and France on another perspective... did any american media tell anything about it?

Over here, the impression (quite accurate, as far as we can tell) is that the French never had any interest in helping with any invasion... Certainly not back in 9/01, when it wasn't even on the table yet...
Remember, the actual Iraq war buildup started in 2002. Back in 9/01 we were getting ready to do Afghanhistan, and Saddam was on the back burner....
Now, an offer of French help for A-stan at that time might have been believable, but it's a bit early to be talking about the Iraq coalition when we weren't planning on invading Iraq just quite yet...
