I was working at the local shop today thinking I needed a cheap pistol to keep in the car. Was looking through the cabinets and found a like new Llama Minimax .45. New they go for $310ish, this was marked $199, owner is a good friend so he said $175.
Anyway, if there are problems with it I can always return it... so I'm not worried about being stuck with a lemon. Anybody have experience with Llama .45s, particularly the MiniMax? I'm not expecting Kimber, I have an Ultra CDP, but I have no intention of leaving that in my car all the time. |
I've only heard good things about Llamas. I have HK, Colt, and Kimber .45's, so I can't give you a hands on opinion.
good and cheap. Kinda like the Star model B. Ugly butt it works
I was surprised, its not that ugly... looks like a Defender that is all parked... noce rubber grips... decent feeling trigger... a little heavy. My roommate is a 1911 aficianado... he has never owned a Llama, but I'm sure he can work the trigger a little.

quick before its too late save your soul
prepair a burnt offering to lord Browning and beg for forgivness. |

20yrs ago, the Llama .45s were ill-fitting rattling pieces'o'crap. I'm stunned to read otherwise.

OK, joking aside... will it go bang when I need it to and not blow up in my hand?
They are not bad pistols, but a little rough. They smooth out a little with use and a lot of folks like them. I had one in the 70's that was like the Government model and it shot pretty good.
I understand that most 1911 parts will not fit the Llama though. |
+ 1. The only Llama I'd ever seen was about 20 years ago, rattled like a maraca and had minute-of-barn-door accuracy. |
Oh I wouldn't worry about that. Your biggest concern is if it'll consistently go bang without stoppage. Only one way to find out... |
Those were the old ones with the cast in vent rib. They are to be avoided at all cost but the new ones arent bad. I had one that ran good. I got rid of it to finance a Kimber cause even if I put $300 in work into it it was still going to be a $200 gun. I had no real complaints though. |

+1 without the nice smiley |

For what its worth, I picked up a well abused LLAMA MaxI (full size) 1911 clone and refinished it. I got the gun for $80 so, yeah, it was a deal. Manufacture date of 1998 according to the serial number.
Frankly, I think LLAMA worked out the kinks. My gun has shot EVERYTHING I've fed to it, even lead SWC rounds. And its shooting 3 inch groups (better if I concentrate) at 15 - 20 yards. Its been a great little workhorse, and for the money, I can't see how I could have gone wrong. For the trivial minded among us, LLAMA has a firing pin lock safety, but doesn't actuate it by way of the trigger as the Colt Series 80 guns do. Rather, the LLAMA version uses the grip safety to unlock the firing pin. Bottom line, if you've "gripped" the pistol you're both unblocking the trigger itself (the traditional grip safety), AND undoing the firing pin safety. |

The late models are not bad pieces. I wouldn't put any serious money into it as it will not be valued as anything more than a Llama. Out of the three I have had the first and last were Mini-max's in 9mm and 45 ACP. Both of those were great shooters. The other was one of the old fullsized CE variants, and it was a rattle-trap jam-o-matic piece of crap. I like the mini-max.
I have no intention of putting any money into it... well other than some decent mags maybe as that seems to be a problem for some folks. Just want an inexpensive piece to keep in the car.
HR, FWIW I've got a Llama "MiniMax II" - compact 10-round double-stack, about the size of a Para P-12. I've never been able to get it to run reliably with anything but ball ammo, but it does fine with ball. The more I shot it, the better it got. It has served me as a "glove box gun" in the past.
EAT: It was $208 NIB, wholesale, delivered (a few years ago) |
Do you have personal experience concerning this or just offering conjecture? I would like to hear from thoise who have owned them, used them extensively, sold them in their shops and have either had to service them or return them... I'm looking for facts. |
I had a .380 Llama several years ago, I never had any problems with it at all..........
I know a guy that has a older Llama 45., The finish sucks, the sights suck, but the gun is decent. I have never seen it jam, and it is accurate enough. He has put alot of rounds through it and he has no complants. The only thing I noticed about it is that the slide and reciever are a bit loose. (Which can be a good and a bad thing)
I would say that they are worth the price, but they probably have a crumy repair policy and won't last as long as some of thier competitors. (But that last part is strictly theory) |
Newer ones have a lifetime warranty for the original owner and it still has the registration and warranty cards in the box. Pistol seems very tight.
Get a used S&W .38 for in the car or something better if you can afford it. Think about it: You are putting a gun in your car "just in case" something happens. IF that happens, wouldn't you rather have a handgun you know is going to fire versus one that has a checkered reputation? A Llama is fine to play around with, but if your life is on the line? |
Well, I have both the full size Llama Maxi-1, and the matching Firestorm .45 Gov't, and they both have run without any FTF /FTE's. But I've only shot SA surplus FMJ.
Wow, thanks for the substantive contribution... maybe I should create an account with the name Not_A_Colt? Without context it means nothing... |
The question is not whether you are going to hell.
Its whether you are going to the morgue with a jammed firearm in your fist. |
Hey, you're most welcome. Incidentally, my name has nothing to do with the pistol.
I think you ought to create an account by that name. |
Once again... can any of the people saying jamo-o-matic back it up with personal experience? Please, if you have that experience I want to hear it! Specifically, who has experience with current production .45s by Llama... specifically the MiniMax if possible.
See my last post. My Mini-Max experiences were great ones. Two flawless functioning autos, one in 9mm and one in 45ACP.
The older CE and some of the DUOTONE models were problematic, but later full sized units seemed to have had these bugs worked out for the most part. The 380 autos seem to all have a magical degree of reliability. Never heard any complaints about them. I did work up a full sized Llama for a friend, came out pretty good. Just like working on a 1911. |
My FFL buddy has had a Lhama for years, and he says it will eat anything. Zero malfunctios.
For $175, why not? As long as it is reliable, it's still a .45 and should be good (stopping power wise) with ball ammo.
If you have any issues with it... just trade it in. What could ya lose? $25? - BG |
If there are problems my dealer friend would give me a full trade credit... issue is the bitch of putting it on and taking it off the license. |
If nothing else its good trading stock. It looks like just what I've been looking for for a truck gun, right price too. If its reliable, it looks like a sweet deal!
<-------------And for my 1000th post. I don't like Llamas they stink and they will spit on you.
So will I if I get one more non-responsive post around here! |
Ok. I think that Llamas are un-1911 enough that you won't end up in 1911 hell. Having said that I don't think I would buy one. It would be like somebody saying they can get a great deal on a Lorcin. Sorry, You asked.
Once again, anything backing it up or is it just an "it ain't a Colt kind of assessment?" I'm very interested in hearing about people's actual negative experiences with them. Thanks in advance.
I looked at some at a gunshow once and they did not impress me enough to warrant my money. If you want to send me some I will purchase one and check it out for you.
And heres a link to some discussion on them. ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=36&t=10799

Yup I saw that, what I gained from that thread was pretty reliable, parts not interchangeable on the .40 and 9, some on the .45. If a part breaks, it has a lifetime warranty.
I'll admit, the finish isn't pretty... just a parked frame and slide. Trigger is decent, will likely get better as its shot or with the little help of a stone. It is heavy, but its not going to be a carry gun, and given the small size (comparable to a Defender) it might help eating some recoil????? |
I owned one for awhile iit went bang everytime was a decent little gun only thing i caution you about is watch out for the brass flying out had one hit me in my nose once. |

If you feel like taking a chance on it. Buy it and about 300 rounds of ammo. Take it and shoot those 300 rounds thru it without cleaning it. Stop about every 50 rounds and put one drop of lube on the each slide rail. If it fires those 300 rounds without a hitch clean it and put it in your car. If it don't ...
