Hi All,

I am looking to purchase a medium sized pack. I have looked at the alice packs, but worry about their comfortability. Those that own them how comfortable are they? It will be used primarily as a 3-5 day camping/hunting pack. I'd like to have it somewhat water-resistant too. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

I like the Bug Out Bag by Piper Industries I picked up at the BX.  It has plenty of room for gear, a removable internal frame, and has padded waist straps and the whole thing has alice and molly loops everywhere.  and one of the front pockets has loops that look like they would work really well for subgun mags.

Bug Out Bag

But then again I got mine for $50.  Retail price kinda sucks.

I use a Bora 95 or 80 depending on the situation from www.arcteryx.com

They are comfortable, well made and ride very well on your back. My family and I have literaly 1000s of miles in these packs and they are wonderful.

If you're not worried about tactical or camo, go with a nice Kelty internal frame pack.  I've had one for about 10 years, still good for a long weekend.  Take the time to understand the suspension and hand fit the frame stays and you'll get something that fits like a glove.  Best thing for weather resistance is a cheapie pack cover of proper waterproof material.. Like a big shower cap.  Milsurp desert camo ones are a dime a dozen, though they might need a scotch-guarding.

Fuck all that 'Brigade Quartermaster' crap.  These guys are the best, no compromises, and form follows function, not form follows 'cool'.

I lived out of a Medium ALICE and a Sea Bag for about a year.
You might want to loose the frame if you decide to go very far, I don't like the USGI frame.

The Mystery Ranch ALICE Frame looks like something I may end up with...
check it out....

Forget Alice packs as they are 1960's tech.  A modern internal frame pack is much more versatile, comfortable and can be had for the same price as a new Alice pack if you shop around and aren't going for the topend products.  If you are not price limited try Moutainsmith, Ironwolf, Kifaru, or similar.  I have a Eureka pack that I've had for years so the lower end packs can last just as long.  Try Campmor for specials on discontinued items at a good price.

I have, use & love my Eagle Becker patrol pack. Big enough to hold what you really need. Small enough to let you move around on your mission.

Look around the REI site, too. I think the civilian packs have it all over the military packs for comfort.
