I am curious as to what this device is that is on the top of the windshield of this humvee...

I've seen it on tanks and other military vehicles; what is it?

Humvee

Device

Thanks
Stew

Smoke canisters.  Tanks have several mounted on them per side.

Why do tanks/humvees need to disperse smoke?  Concealment?

Mainly it looks real cool, kinda like a rock concert.

Yes, concealment. Very useful in a war zone.

I thought maybe they were chaff or flares, but smoke makes way more sense. Thanks......

smokes

pop em and ya cant see shit including where your goin if the wind is right or theres more smokers in front of you

A veteran armor expert writes:

"I've used this system, it's almost worthless. The fire danger alone to friendly Infantry, and structures, etc. Maybe some wet Jungle? I hit the Tank next to me with one grenade once and burned up everthing in the bustle rack and almost destroyed the vehicle and crew. I cannot think of one tactical scenario they were worth the risk."

...And the two lead guys coming from the HumVee are both lefties....what's up with that? (Just tryin' to provoke a southpaw fight!)

Its a withdrawal aid. Pop off the smoke and back out under the cover. Problem is smoke tends to do little to slow bullets.

I'd hate to be holding on to the machinegun and fail to notice the driver reversing or speeding up in a hurry, might get a hell of a ride before you got your brain in gear and let go.

The M1 can easily see through the smoke or fog.  They can use their infrared to manuver and target badguys.  Smoke is for those guys that dont have this ability.

I don't know what the SF guys have loaded in those launchers. It started out as a less-lethal mod for the MP Humvees. I think they fired a flash-bang and gas. Google less lethal and MP and it should come up.

Hopefully they have something other than the RP smoke used by armor vehicles, that will set most soft equipment and people on fire if it used.

I like the IR illuminator in place of the usual bug-out light on the hood.

Lightweight version of the tank smoke dispensors.
Also can be loaded with sting-bomb (aka rubber buckshot-spewing grenades) or frag, IIRC.  My boss worked on that project before he transfered over to ours.
