Lol, he double tapped and wrote this post twice. I answered the other one with an opposite answer. .45 doesn't suppress too well (I've only fired suppressed .22s and 9mm) because a lot of the gas follows the bullet straight out the can. It never goes into the baffles. 9mm lets less of the gas out the bore. ETA: This isn't from personal experience, this is what a guy from Gemtech told me. |

+1 Now 9mm 147 gr. is subsonic already. The big issue with suppressed 9s is the integrally suppressed ones like the MP5SD which bleed off pressure and use standard 9mm. THe problem with this is the lowered velocity 9mm performs like a hot .380 which ain't great. The only advantage to the MP5SD is nearly complete suppression. Personally I prefer a standard MP5 with an add on suppressor (Gemtechs Striker II) using 147 gr. rounds. |

+1 This is what SJM claims also. There's some scientific data to back it up but the claim is based on the smaller diameter making it easier to contain the gasses. |

I have a .45 suppressor....It sucks because it is a "wet" suppressor and has to be greased every 2 mags or there abouts...From what the manufacturer says, ALL .45 cans are wet because of the diameter and weight of the bullet..
If you think you'll have a problem with greasing it every 2 mags, then get the 9mm dry suppressor..... |

For 99% of shooters the .45 will be the best choice. Unless you get really specific about your gear the .45 remains the most potent of the 2 rounds after suppression. You don't need a dedicated subsonic round, etc. My point was to address the 9mm issue since I have some experience with it. |

Not ALL cans for .45 are wet. Bowers makes one for the Mac10 that isn't a wet can. And AAC makes one for the UMP that is wet or dry (suppression is greater wet). But your basic complaint is valid in most cases. |

What is the dB difference in each?
I've heard from others that a suppressed .45 is similar in sound to someone dropping a phone book (as in, still a pretty forceful 'pop') but I'm not sure if that's something you should expect with all larger centerfire rounds or not. |

If that is the case about it being a smaller diameter , then the subsonic 220gr whisper should be quieter than a subsonic 9mm. I have the 300 whisper surpressed with a gemteck and outside shooting I can't tell any diffrence between the 45 and the 300.

Do what I'm doing - get both!
 And, for what it is worth, I've heard that the absolute BEST pistol in .45 to suppress is the HK P9S in .45 - unfortunately, very few were made, they are expensive (luckily, I have one of them - woot!) |

It depends on your needs. A quality 9mm can with subsonic ammo will be quieter than a 45acp can even wet. This discounts grease pack cans that are only shot for a few rounds then repacked or cans using wipes that touch the bullet and are only good for a few shots The 45 has a larger hole and the the gas behind it it is going to make it louder. Water will help quieten the can by putting out the flame/burning powder. The 45 can will usually be bigger. The 45 round has more energy than the 9mm subsonic or not. If you need that power, go with the 45. There are some great can out now, my advice is to listen to as many as possibla and make your decision that way.
