hanau's idea could be done ethically as well.

Check and see if any of neighbors have broadband.  Some ISP's don't have any issues with sharing.  My ISP (Speakeasy) even encourages it.  You might be able to work a deal and split the cost.

Tell me about it.  I am in a hotel with high speed wireless during the week and dial-up on the weekends.  It kills me,

I hear ya, buddy. After three years of surfing the web on T1 and Cable lines, the sudden drop back to dialup left me in shock.

Fortunately, the hotels I stay in have hi-speed!

I could snag the wireless from the church next door if I wanted.  If you don't mind sittin' in your car surfin the internet I'm sure you could find a node not too far away.  I found 50 in a square mile here, mostly open and in fact mine is not secured.

That sucks.  There is nothing worse than going backwards in connection speeds.  At home I only have DSL and it seems slow compared to the office broadband connection.

Yahoo/SBC dsl here goes for less than $30.00 per month.  Have you thought about giving up your landline phone and going with a voice over IP telephone connection on the dsl line?  Might be cheaper as most land lines go for more than $30.00 per month.

Well for 802.11g -

Indoors: Up to 328 feet (100 meters)
Outdoors: Up to 1,312 feet (400 meters)

approximately and under ideal conditions.  There are already cities and even countries that have gone fully wireless.  Can't wait for a nationwide wireless network...
