Well, rather then fight with getting the Taurus fixed (Which needed brakes, AC recharged, passenger window didnt work, rear sway bar was broke, door panel was duck taped to the door and slipped into neutral when I turned left) we decided to trade it in and got a VW Jetta TDI. Love the Jetta!

I had a 99 2.slow and now have a 2002.5 (180hp) 1.8 turbo. The 99 was terrible for reliability, repairs, etc, but I still really liked the car and got another one. The new one is much better reliablity wise (and much faster). Good features and content for the price.
That said, I think this is my last VW, looking at a used M3 or G35 coupe, the 1.8t isn't enough any more. |

Ours is a 100hp. Turbo diesel. Its actually suprisingly snappy. The Euro-spec diesels also come in 130 or 150 HP, a 150HP diesel in a Jetta would haul some ass. I'm very happy with it. Its a 05 and nearly fully loaded. Absolutely no complaints with the car, love it! |

that little TDI engine kicks ass I drove my dads beetle with that motor and while I felt like a loser for driving it, it wasnt half bad. and the mileage really rocks on those as well.

Get rid of it before the powertrain warranty runs out. Jetta trannys are $3,500 and no one can a)get them or b) install them but a VW dealer.
I used to love VW (that 98 Jetta GLX was my fourth one) but I'll never buy another one after that experience. You used to be able to work on them, or at least find a mechanic who could. Now most of the eng/trans is proprietary and takes special factory tools to even get into. |

My brother bought an 04 Jetta with 18K on the clock, it's been in the shop 4 times in the 9 months he's owned it. It is going in this week AGAIN for some kind of fuel-injector problem. I thought that a Jetta was going to be my next car, but after his problems, and reading of other VW problems, I am rethinking my next car.

My 98 TDI is running fine. Still average 47-49 in observed fuel economy(mileage between fillups divided by gallons required to fill to the gills). Of course, I've got 89000 miles and two accidents, but these are NYC miles where highway speed is a crisp 5-10 mph.
