N. Korea is 100% right by the way.

They believe that the only way the United States will leave them alone is if they have the deterrence of nuclear weapons, and without that deterrence, they'd still be one Bush's list of countries to take over.

They're right about that too. Iran knows it as well. Bush has ignited a new arms race - the race to get nukes to protect your sovereignty before the US can invade.

It's really sad to me that the biggest cause of nuclear proliferation today is the threat of US agression.

I suppose it was North Korea's lack of nukes that allowed us to ravage bomb and invade their country with impunity since the 1953 ceasefire. Oh wait a minute, we didn't do that, did we? North Korea invades the South, and the US is the aggressive one for trying to stop them.

Thats kinda like the debate I had one time in Jr. High. Kid told me the Chinese gov't was right for having tanks at tienamin to control the protestors. I looked at him and told him without the tanks (and other aspects of dictatorship) the protestors wouldn't need to be their. Eliminate one and the other goes away.

Just a point of historical perspective...

There was always one Korea until the end of WWII. Of course, we choose LIBERTY, however, not everyone in the world does.

Korea has many National Holidays. Korea has four National Celebration Days;
October 3rd to commemorate the founding of ancient Korea in 2333 BC,
March 1st to commemorate an independence movement in 1919,
August 15th to commemorate the liberation form the Japanese rule in 1945 at the Japanese surrender to the USA, and
July 17th for the declaration of our constitution in 1948.

We don't know exact day of the founding of ancient Korea. But historians generally agree that the founding of ancient Korea occurred in 2333 BC according to the mythology of our founding fathers. Throughout the history of Korea several different kingdoms governed the Korean peninsula and Manchuria, a part of current Chinese territory at the north of Korea peninsula. Korea amazes the world that Korea has maintained the uniformity of one race, one language, and a unique culture different from neighboring countries. They did this for some 4300 years even though its neighboring counties invaded it several times.

The Yi Dynasty started in 1392 and achieved many successes in politics, national welfare, culture, literature, and arts. Korea absorbed the continental culture and developed or added their own culture and then passed it on to the people of the Japanese Islands. Japan needed to learn the advanced culture of Korea and to trade with Korea for their necessities of the lives. Plundering by Japan had been occurring on the Korean shorelines, so the Korean government reluctantly designated a small area in Pusan for a point of trade.

The shoguns and samurais of Japan unified the country they learned the rapidly developing Western Technology in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Meanwhile Korea had been tangled with internal politics and successions of child kings and weaklings. Queen dowagers and their clans had been controlling the country and speeding the downfall of Korea. When King Choljong died at the age of 32 in 1864, three queen dowager clans of the deceased kings lived in the palace. The deceased king had no direct bloodline heir. They adopted an eleven-year-old boy in the bloodline of the Yi Dynasty as the son of the deceased king and inaugurated him as the 26th King. This resulted in the King's father earning the power to govern the country. As the King reached the age to govern the nation by himself, his clever and powerful and powerful Queen became the real power.

Japanese imperialism took advantage of Korea's struggle. Japan succeeded in establishing a "protectorate" by forcing the Korean King's cabinet members to sign a document giving up control of the Korean diplomacy, enforcement of law, public safety, and letting Japan construct a telegraph network in Korea after its victories over China and Russia in 1905. They did this against both the King's will and that of the majority of the Korean people. To make it worse, both the USA and England blessed the Japanese imperialism towards Korea and Manchuria as a reward for Japan shying away from the Philippines and the British colonies. Sadly almost all Westerners including Christian missionaries and scholars supported Japan's "Modernizing role" in Korea. The West did not understand, realize or sympathize with the plight of Korea in those times.

Japan succeeded in formally annexing Korea in 1910. This made it easier for Japan's war machine to eventually conquer the whole of Asia by securing a military base in Korea. Japan's rule over Korea for the 35 years from 1905 to 1945, exacted an extremely harsh treatment of the Korean people. Japan controlled almost every facet of Korean life. They forced Koreans to change the names of the cities, people's own names in the Japanese style. They forced them to speak only Japanese in the schools and government offices. They required them to worship the Japanese Emperor at shrines built throughout Korea. Japan created a system of getting Koreans fighting Koreans. Many Koreans killed themselves at the shame of losing their country. Japan jailed many patriotic Koreans and killed them by the thousands.

American military leaders ignored the Committee for the Preparation of Korean Independence (CPKI) and thus lost an excellent opportunity to organize a truly indigenous Korean Government. The US and Russia divided the Korean Peninsula at the 38th parallel in the middle of Korea, They tried to put the northern half under the trusteeship of Russia and the southern half under the trusteeship of the USA, each for a term of five years until they could organize it under a unified government. Extreme rightists led by Syngman Rhee opposed the trusteeship to organize the government in the South alone. Thus they created a unified disaster that exists today. The majority of the north contained most of Korea's industry and the south contained most of Korea's agriculture. The US Army Military Government in Korea (USAGAK) did not have anyone who had an adequate knowledge about the Korean Independent Movement. Not a single person at USAGAK could even speak Korean. The US brought a well-educated and well-known Korean, Syngman Rhee from American and set him up to be the leader of the southern half of Korea.

Dr. Rhee, an arrogant man and did not have much support from the majority of the Koreans people. In order to organize his own party's government, he started using some Japanese collaborators and eventually labeled all of his political enemies as communists. Dr. Rhee organized a movement to oppose the trusteeship, but some popular leaders such as Kim Koo and Yeo Un-Hyung supported the trusteeship. Dr. Rhee won that battle in South Korea and eventually had many Korean leaders assassinated by his Japanese collaborators and Rhee supporters. The organization of the South Korean Government occurred on August 15, 1948.

Korea still struggles with the same issue of division of Korea, Millions of the Korean people have died in both the North and South including some 50,000 American military and soldiers of many other countries to protect the integrity of South Korea. The whole world need to know that the Korean race is one and a peace loving people, even though divided by external force and technically still at war in the continuing Korean War. Let us teach the children of Korea that our generation can achieve the unification of Korea and real independence, for which our parents fought to the death.
